POSITION SUMMARY

In this career-oriented role you will repair and maintain a variety of complex mechanical equipment, including pumps, compressors, blowers, boilers, turbines, vehicles, and electrical systems at the Water Reclamation Facility to ensure the production of wastewater effluent and compliance to all State and Federal Regulations.

This is an excellent full-time career opportunity with progressive on the job training for advancement opportunities, longevity pay, and a potential for promotion to Lead worker or Foreman status with additional pay, (dependent upon experience, performance, and openings within the department.) FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Work week: 2:30pm - 10:30pm (5/8's) or 2:30pm - 12:30am (4/10's), weekends and on call duty required.

The principal function of an employee in this class is to operate, maintain, and repair the mechanical equipment at the City's Water Reclamation Facility to ensure the production of wastewater effluent and compliance to all State and Federal regulations. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a Water Reclamation Facility environment with exposure to hazardous chemicals, airborne pathogens, and high voltage electricity.

  • Collects and conducts tests on water samples in accordance with EPA and State regulations,

  • Maintains complete and accurate records of facility operation functions, tests, results, and maintenance work performed;

  • Operates a variety of mechanical gates and valves to regulate the flow of waste water through various treatment processes to ensure the production of effluent water;

  • Performs treatment analysis and processes control tests;

  • Adjusts equipment to maintain treatment parameters, and to maintain proper flows to ensure maximum efficiency of facility equipment;

  • Inspects facility equipment, and reports any failures or operating difficulties, including initiating work orders and request repairs;

  • Operates, adjusts, and performs basic maintenance of facility equipment to ensure compliance with established standards, including welding, fabrication, carpentry, and minor electrical repairs;

  • Observes meters, gauges, charts, and instruments, and accurately records all finding accordingly;

  • Monitors Facility operations to ensure all processes are conducted in a safe and efficient manner, and in compliance with Federal rules and regulations;

  • Performs general maintenance and repair on all facility vehicles, plows, mowers, and other related light duty equipment;

  • Ensures all chemicals are handled in a safe and proper manner;

  • Maintains the interior and exterior of the Treatment Facility in a clean and orderly manner to ensure a safe work environment for City employees and the general public;

  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;

  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;

  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;

  • Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;

  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;

  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED; and

  • Some (1 year) experience working with mechanical systems and equipment, including operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair; or

  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Substantial knowledge of the basic principles and practices of waste water treatment and reuse;

  • Substantial knowledge of the use and maintenance of related hand and power tools;

  • Substantial knowledge of established basic principles of record keeping;

  • Substantial knowledge of Federal, State, and City safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures;

  • Substantial knowledge of mathematics, physics, and fluid flow to ensure accurate and efficient measurements and calculations;

  • Substantial knowledge of related electrical and electronics principles and troubleshooting techniques;

  • Ability to analyze mathematical and physical data in an efficient and precise manner;

  • Ability to collect, test, and analyze wastewater samples;

  • Ability to work with hazardous chemicals and high voltage electricity in a safe and proper manner;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other City employees, and the general public;

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;

  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;

  • Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;

  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;

  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;

  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;

  • Integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must complete Volumes I, II, and III of the Operation of Water Reclamation Facility Field Study Program within 3 years of employment;

  • Must pass the Montana Class I Wastewater Certification Test within 3 years of employment;

  • May be required to obtain Montana Type 2 Class B Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement within 6 months of employment (this also subjects employee to DOT required drug and alcohol testing provisions);

  • Valid Driver's License at time of hire and obtain a Montana Driver's License within 60 days of employment;

  • Must have the ability to respond to the Bozeman Water Reclamation Facility within 20 minutes of being notified when assigned to stand-by assignments;

  • Pre-employment drug testing may be required.
