General Statement

University Communications mission is to enhance MSU’s public image, increase the public’s awareness of MSU’s accomplishments and develop consistent communications that build our reputation. University Communications manages the marketing, promotional and licensing efforts of the university, supports and promotes MSU’s activities through expert and creative communications. We provide a wide range of services to the university community through our operational units: MontanaPBS, MSU News Service, MSU Creative Services, MSU Web and Digital Communications, University Marketing, MSU Public Relations and University Printing. Our staff includes journalists, media specialists, writers, editors, graphic designers, photographers, broadcast media specialists, publications specialists, marketing specialists, Web developers and printers.

The Web Software Developer II position will develop, maintain, and support both large- and small-scale web communications software at the university level, with additional focus within 4-campus systems. The Web Software Developer II analyzes university needs, user requirements, and existing functionality and builds web application components to meet those requirements while following our best practices within our existing software frameworks. This position also provides technical support in troubleshooting and problem resolution with all our production web applications and services. This position is located at MSU Bozeman.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify, develop, and implement comprehensive technical solutions for new and current Web and digital communications.

  • Initiate and manage the execution of Web projects from planning through development using our legacy web programming stack ( PHP , JavaScript, MySQL) and our new MEVN stack (MongoDB, Express, Vue and NodeJS).

  • Build, maintain, and enhance digital development standards and best practices (Web, mobile, email, digital signage).

  • Develop, plan and implement usability, accessibility and search engine optimization improvements across the university’s Web domain.

  • Provide tier-3 user support (and tier-1 and 2 as required) for web applications and services managed by Web & Digital Communications.

  • Manage integrations with third-party software.

  • Perform other duties as needed in support of Web and Digital Communications team.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field plus 2 years of recent web software development, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience programming with PHP , Java, or other Object-Oriented language in a server-side web development context.

  • Experience client-side programming with JavaScript and/or JavaScript libraries (jQuery).

  • Experience with database programming using MySQL and relational database concepts.

  • Demonstrated experience in a team-based software engineering workflow

i. developing locally within a VM environment (Vagrant, LAMP , WAMP , or similar)

ii. deploying code to a production environment

iii. maintaining code with version control (Git preferred)

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience working with strategic marketing and branding as they relate to Web Communications.

  • Experience in higher education or complex multi-faceted organizations.

  • Experience building web applications with PHP , MySQL, and JavaScript.

  • Experience with XSLT and XSL .

  • Experience with Linux command line operations.

  • Experience in user experience (UX), accessibility, and/or search engine optimization ( SEO ).
