BPPF Associate or Senior Research Geologist

DUTIES:

The Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) invites applications for an Economic Geologist to be based in Butte, Montana, on the campus of Montana Tech. The successful candidate will be a field-based economic geologist. The position will focus on research and public service related to economic geology in MT with approximately 80% of effort on metallic deposits and 20% on industrial minerals. The position will also involve considerable direct contact with the public and extensive field work during the field season (May-September). Field work will require hiking and include mapping and sample collection often at active/inactive mines in sometimes remote and rugged terrain.

Duties will include leading an active economic geology research program that produces MBMG publications related to ore deposits and mineral resource potential, particularly with respect to critical minerals and rare earth elements. Topics of interest also include mining activities and small mine operations (water/soil geochemistry, mining/reclamation methods). In addition, the individual will provide information to the public, mining groups, and government agencies through MBMG publications, presentations at professional meetings, public presentations, workshops, seminars, and field courses. The position will require frequent interaction with the public including field visits to active and potential mine sites, assistance with small-miners exemption permitting questions, and addressing inquiries related to mineral identification and potential.

The successful candidate will occasionally provide mineral resource data and interpretation as needed to other MBMG projects and programs such as those in hydrogeology and geologic hazards. The successful candidate will be expected to write proposals, manage projects, publish research results, and present results at scientific meetings.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree plus 8 years’ experience or Ph.D. plus 5 years’ experience (Associate Professor level) or Master’s degree plus 13 years’ experience or Ph.D. plus 10 years’ experience (Professor level) in Geology or closely related field; experience should include economic geology outside the degree activities.

  • Excellent written skills demonstrated through pertinent scientific publications and reports.

  • Good verbal communication skills demonstrated through technical and public presentations related to economic geology.

  • Physical capability to hike, map, and sample in remote areas; ability to acquire and maintain a Montana driver’s license.

  • Geologic mapping of mineral deposits including their associated alteration.

  • In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.

    Research-oriented with a strong understanding of geologic mapping principals, experience developing and working with digital geologic maps, and a strong understanding of ore deposits, particularly as they relate to critical minerals and rare earth elements and resource development.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated interest in studies of critical minerals and rare earth elements.

  • Publications and reports on economic geology in the Western US and Canada

  • Familiarity with ESRI software and applications

  • Familiarity with the USGS critical minerals list and a working understanding of the natural mineral systems

  • Familiarity with the USGS Earth-MRI (Mapping Resources Initiative) program

  • Experience working with the public and communicating with non-scientific audiences.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Extended time working on a computer. Capability to hike, map, and sample in remote areas; ability to acquire and maintain a Montana driver’s license.
