Montana Technological University Curator - (Data Preservation Technician) in Butte, Montana

Under supervision of the Data Preservation team, the Curator (Data Preservation Technician) will evaluate and organize complex historical mining- and geology-related information incorporated into archives. Tasks include analyzing newly obtained or other previously unprocessed data and implementing methods to stabilize, digitize, digitally restore, and file this information. The Technician assigns documents to student employees for digitization and confirms that the data are complete and accurately digitized. The Technician develops accurate metadata records for newly acquired information. Because Data Preservation digital records are georeferenced, the Technician will help students determine accurate geographic coordinates (i.e. latitude and longitude). The Technician conducts quality assurance reviews to ensure that information is accurate and appropriately cataloged in the hard copy and digital filing systems. In cooperation with the Data Preservation team, the Technician develops improved digitization procedures and instructs students in their use. The Technician must have exceptional organizational skills, general knowledge of archival principles and practices, strong filing experience, and familiarity with topographic maps and online geospatial resources. The Technician receives and responds to face-to-face, telephone, and email inquiries by the public for historical mining-related information and ensures a professional, constructive, productive, and efficient work environment. Work schedule is standard 40-hour week in office.
