Road Design staff participate in assembling of road plans packages, which are a major part of the development of all highway projects in the Department of Transportation. Creating road plans packages entails proposals and evaluations of alternates, computations of geometric data, estimation of plan quantities, assembly of plan sheets, incorporation of recommendations from other technical specialists, and composition of specifications needed to build highways on the Secondary, Primary, and Interstate Highway systems of the State of Montana. In addition to plans package preparation, this position requires preparation of project reports. _Knowledge:_ Develops sufficient engineering knowledge, skill, and judgement in a specific practice area to perform the routine engineering tasks in the assigned area. Although the knowledge acquired is in a specific work area, that knowledge and competence should reasonably transfer to other work areas at the same level. Broad knowledge of engineering practices and principles and construction methods, processes and procedures, computer-aided drafting and design software, and engineering techniques are required for projects of moderate complexity. A journey level knowledge of federal guidelines and procedures regarding road design and construction is also required. _Education/Experience:_ Four years of design-related experience, or two years of design-related experience and a two-year Associate Degree in Computer-Aided Design, Survey or a related field, or a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field. Related degrees may include Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Engineering, Geologic/Geotechnical Engineering, Materials Engineer, or Engineering Science. Prior work experience is not required for entry level, with a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the fields mentioned above.
