The Caterpillar Oil & Gas and Marine Division currently has an opening for an Engine Mechanic- Operator located in Butte, Montana. As an Engine Mechanic- Operator at Caterpillar, you will be responsible for reviewing daily work schedules and carry out any maintenance and/or operations duties needed in a safe and timely manner. Coordinating with all departments to minimize downtime and keep operations informed of any progress or complications that would delay completion of the job. Ensuring mechanical equipment is fully functional and available when needed. Performing daily operations of the power plant in a safe and prudent manner. Performing operations / maintenance of synchronizing and power switchgear.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Reporting to the Lead Technician, the Engine Mechanic / Operator will support the business objectives by focusing on the following areas:

  • Record and keep daily logs in Microsoft Excel / Word and the Operations Log Book of any maintenance and/or operations activities.

  • Safely troubleshoot, maintain, and repair mechanical equipment, reciprocating engines and/or balance of plant.

  • Perform maintenance work to ensure it is carried out to within company guidelines and manufacturers recommendations.

  • Ensure all safety equipment is utilized and is available in the work areas. Understand and comply with safety policies and procedures. Ensure that any work permit or safety system is complied with. When appropriate submit safety suggestions, which will improve overall plant operations. Review and make recommendations on all safety suggestions submitted through your position.

  • Keep abreast of company policies and safety practices, keep operations / maintenance group advised of any changes. Promote safety and environmental awareness and report any accidents.

  • Perform industrial maintenance activities including, but not limited to, the operation, maintenance and repair of pumps, fans, engines, fuel systems and remaining balance of plant operations.

  • Power generating facility operations including, but not limited to, activities that involve local control panels, supervisor control and data acquisition systems, keys, switches, buttons, handles, valves, etc.

  • Recognize abnormal sounds, vibrations, potential safety problems and the ability to take appropriate action to prevent damage to equipment, downtime or allow a serious safety hazard to develop.

  • Follow company safety and environmental policies and practices. Adapting work practices which are consistent with the letter and spirit of these policies and participate to the fullest degree in programs aimed at increasing personal safety and environmental awareness.

  • Perform not only mechanical / operational duties but provide instrumentation / electrical assistance when needed with instructional direction.

  • Motivated self-starter and the ability to perform some jobs and tasks without the help and/or supervision of others.

  • Perform any task assigned by a lead technician and/or supervisor.

Problem solving requirements

  • The ability to identify a potential problem and correct it before it results in equipment damage or downtime.

  • The ability to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical problems.

  • The ability to use and understand technical manuals to find pertinent information and order spare parts for warehouse stock.

  • The ability to safely troubleshoot, maintain, repair and overhaul large reciprocating engines.

  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and operations / maintenance manuals.

Major challenges of this position

  • Minimize equipment downtime and parts consumption costs.

  • Ensure preventive maintenance programs are carried out in a concise and timely manner.

  • Recognize and report any circumstance that could potentially cause a hazard, be deemed unsafe, loss of production, or damage to equipment.

  • Be able to work with a large group of workers and follow the rules of conduct of a foreign company.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2-year technical degree in diesel, heavy fuel oil, or spark ignited engine systems and 3 to 5 years of experience in the maintenance and overhaul of diesel, heavy fuel oil, spark ignited engines and industrial type equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Completion of four-year apprenticeship program or equivalent.

  • Fundamental knowledge of general power generation and/or industrial applications.

  • The ability and willingness to be on-call 24/7 with some weekend / night shift duties.
