Field Geologist – Professional Scientist OR Assistant Professor

The Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) invites applications from candidates with expertise in geologic mapping to join our expanding geology program. The successful candidate will join a team of geoscientists with diverse backgrounds who are passionate about fieldwork in Montana, a state renowned for its complicated geology with a stunning backdrop of rugged mountains, pristine river valleys, and expansive plains. The position entails several months of field mapping annually, working alone or with other geologists in remote areas of Montana. The successful candidate will work with MBMG’s geologists, GIS specialists, cartographers, and laboratory technicians to produce and publish geologic maps, analytical data, and associated databases. The candidate will participate in writing proposals, managing projects, disseminating geologic information, and interacting with MBMG’s stakeholders, including members of industry, the research community, and the general public. The candidate will also participate in cross-disciplinary projects involving geologic hazards, economic geology, or hydrogeology. The position is based in Butte, Montana, a historic mining city that offers many exceptional recreational opportunities and festivals. The position is supported by and contingent upon grant money administered by the U.S. Geological Survey’s STATEMAP program. The MBMG is a department of the Montana Technological University, but this is not a teaching position and is not eligible for tenure.
Required Qualifications:
Professional Scientist Level:
Master’s degree in Geology or a closely related field.
Excellent written and verbal skills demonstrated in the cover letter and interviews.
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.
Assistant Professor Level:
Master’s degree and 3 years of relevant experience, or a Doctoral degree. both the degree and experience must be in Geology or a closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience collecting and interpreting field data to create geologic maps and cross-sections.
Working knowledge of modern field methods applied to geologic mapping.
Proficient computer skills relevant to the position and experience using GIS software to organize and disseminate geologic data.
Experience mapping in a variety of geologic settings.
Experience applying analytical techniques to geologic research.
Demonstrated ability to complete and publish professional geologic maps.
Demonstrated experience publishing reports, maps, abstracts and presenting to scientific and public audiences.
Success at writing grants and obtaining external funding.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Physical Demands
Work in remote settings and car camp for extended periods of time.
Conduct fieldwork on foot, hiking several miles off trail a day, often through challenging terrain.
Collect and carry rock samples for several miles.
Sit at a computer station for long periods of time, several months a year.
Stand for several hours a day in a laboratory setting.
