Description

General Statement of Duties

Provides reference services, information services, customer service and programming in the library. Assists with day-to-day operation of the library including circulation, reference, materials selection, processing, special programming, public computer assistance and outreach. May manage day-to-day operations in a library. Position may constitute work at the Library in varied departments. Makes decisions based on policies & established practices but refers unusual situations to supervisor. Receives supervision from librarian, supervisor or Library Director.

This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City-County of Butte-Silver Bow and the Federation of Butte-Silver Bow Public Employees, Local no. 4372& 4372A, MFPE Clerks.

Duties/Responsibilities

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: (Illustrative)

  • Performs ongoing assignments of moderate to high difficulty. Manages one or more projects simultaneously.

  • Promotes and maintains a high standard of customer service.

  • Maintains facility and reports problems to supervisor.

  • Circulates materials and registers borrowers. Responsible for daily cash handling procedures.

  • Monitors and maintains collection, including shelving, processing, inspecting, cleaning, etc.

  • Provides reader’s advisory, reference and general information services.

  • Monitors and maintains PC's and software, catalog and services.

  • Maintains accurate service statistics.

  • May manage day-to-day operations, including shift responsibility for department as assigned.

  • May provide outreach services, including book talks and school visits.

  • Follows policy and procedures of Butte-Silver Bow Public Library.

  • Perform all duties and work assignments in a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound manner. Specifically, complying with the Health & Safety Program; maintaining work areas in a safe and orderly manner; identifying and reporting unsafe conditions; reporting all accidents; wearing required personal protective equipment; and attending safety-related meetings, training sessions, fit testing, etc.

  • Perform all duties and work assignments in compliance with project quality requirements.

  • Act responsibly and ethically, and in conformance with generally accepted business, occupational, and professional standards.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of integrated library systems of alpha numeric filing, Dewey Decimal System, OCLC, WorldCat, ILL protocol, reference materials and methods available to assist patrons.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

  • Knowledge of books, movies, theater, local resources, state and national resources, current events, etc.

  • Ability to analyze, perform or manage a variety of library projects.

  • Willingness and ability to advance skills (participation in training and continuing education), incl. computer systems & software

  • Works well with supervisors to develop and implement department goals within overall library goals

  • Maintains courteous, friendly, and constructive relationships with patrons, staff, County departments, vendors, etc.

  • Performs all duties and work assignments in a safe, healthy and environmentally sound manner.   • Within three years of appointment, Library Associate shall have successfully completed 30 continuing education credits or 6 credit hours of formal academic course work in library science. Such training may have been received prior to the date of appointment. Training will be available through BSBPL on-site and off-site, as well as online.

Tools and Equipment Used:

  • Personal computers, scanners, printers, photocopier, date stamps, book trucks, fax machine, telephone, security system and other equipment as required.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Ten or more years of applicable and progressively responsible experience demonstrating above-average performance

  • Bachelors’ Degree from an accredited college and public library experience preferred

  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.

    Required Special Qualifications

  • Must possess a current Montana Driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one within a reasonable period of time after employment.

  • Must be a resident of Butte-Silver Bow during employment according to Butte-Silver Bow Ordinance. See below.

“2.08.010 Residence during employment. From and after October 1, 1979, all employees of the local government of Butte-Silver Bow shall be bona fide residents within the boundaries of Butte-Silver Bow during the period of their employment by the government of Butte-Silver Bow.

(Ord. 85 § 1, 1979)”

Required Physical Abilities

  • Ability to reach, bend and lift up to 25 lbs.

  • Ability to push/pull a rolling book cart.

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate well with department personnel, other employees, representatives of other local, state and federal agencies and the general public in person and by telephone;
