Description
General Statement of Duties
Performs maintenance and event modification tasks at public buildings, grounds and facilities; provides support to the Civic Center Events Crew as requested; does related work as required.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
This is a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled work involving the performance of maintenance and custodial activities necessary to maintain, alter and clean buildings, grounds and facilities and to prepare such facilities for a wide variety of scheduled events. The work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the Government Buildings Manager except when performing duties at the Civic Center at which time position is under the supervision of the Civic Center Manager. In performing the duties some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with the Government Buildings Manager, Civic Center Manager, Buildings Maintenance Engineer, other Custodians, employees, facility users and the general public. Oversight may be exercised over temporary employees.
This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City-County of Butte-Silver Bow and the Laborers’ International Union of North America, Local No. 1686 (Event and Service Workers).

Duties/Responsibilities
Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
Primary Responsibilities of Service Worker – Government Buildings:
Performs skilled and semi-skilled building maintenance, cleaning, snow removal and landscaping tasks;
Operates hand and power tools;
Cleans windows and floors, gathers and removes trash, changes light bulbs, hangs flags and banners and changes marquee sign;
Moving furniture;
Ordering supplies;
Laundering cleaning items;
Decorating;
Checks fire extinguishers and defibrillators;
Attends meetings, conferences and workshops as requested and authorized;
Performs related work as required.
Performs all duties and work assignments in a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound manner. Specifically, complies with the Health & Safety Program; maintains work area in a safe and orderly manner; identifies and reports unsafe conditions; reports all accidents; wears required personal protective equipment; and attends safety-related meetings, training sessions, fit testing, etc.
Performs all duties and work assignments in compliance with project quality requirements.
Acts responsibly and ethically, and in conformance with generally accepted business, occupational, and professional standards.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Secondary Responsibilities of Event Worker – Civic Center:
Constructs and dismantles stages, barricades, applicable flooring, and sports facilities and equipment;
Provides support to Civic Center Events Crew as requested.
Operates heavy, medium and light equipment such as trucks, forklifts, towing of utility trailers, floor shampoo and buffing machines, mowers and snow removal equipment.
Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Good knowledge of a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, custodial and maintenance tasks such building or mechanical maintenance and landscaping.
Good knowledge of standard construction safety practices and procedures, including forklift and hand tool safety practices;
Ability to operate heavy, medium and light equipment;
Ability to use hand and power tools;
Ability to perform strenuous physical labor;
Ability to communicate well with assigned Supervisors, Buildings Maintenance Engineer, other Custodians and employees and the general public both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisory personnel, customers, exhibitors, performers and the general public;
Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
Ability to perform a wide variety of custodial and maintenance tasks with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
Acceptable Experience and Training
Graduation from a high school; and
Some experience in maintenance and/or construction trade work; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Must be able to pass a complete background check
Required Special Qualifications
Must possess a current Montana Driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one within a reasonable period of time after employment.
Must be a resident of Butte-Silver Bow during employment according to Butte-Silver Bow Ordinance. See below.

From and after October 1, 1979, all employees of the local government of Butte-Silver Bow shall be bona fide residents within the boundaries of Butte-Silver Bow during the period of their employment by the government of Butte-Silver Bow.

Essential Physical Abilities
