Talen Energy Chemical Engineer/Support Engineer/Sr. Engineer in Colstrip, Montana

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without restriction. Annual Salary: 80,000 to 110,000 DOE, plus bonus POSITION OVERVIEW This position is responsible for performing chemical and system engineering assignments that are varied and may be somewhat difficult in character. Job duties will include operations and troubleshooting for Wastewater Treatment systems. In this position, candidate will be responsible for daily performance monitoring for system chemistry, while working with contractors and operators to oversee plant performance. Candidate will manage and monitor all equipment affiliated with Wastewater processes and remediation activities. Work is normally technical in nature and requires an understanding of engineering concepts to evaluate alternatives and propose engineering solutions. An understanding of laboratory testing and chemistry analysis are also preferred. Additional activities include assisting in routine and diagnostic testing of water treatment components and systems and completing engineering studies. Primary Responsibilities 1. Assists or leads work on wastewater engineering projects (depending on experience).2. Builds relationships with operations and maintenance, as to facilitate knowledge transfer and engineering assistance.3. Works under supervision in the field and/or home office in a variety of functions and challenging but structured work that develops competencies in the function/discipline.4. Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using well defined engineering procedures, which may include routine and diagnostic testing of components and systems, and engineering studies.5. Continually expands and improves technical and business skill set under own initiative with instruction, guidance, and direction from others.6. Assists in a variety of topics including developing innovative procedures, improved design recommendations or new or better equipment purchase recommendations.7. Responds to equipment/component problems to perform troubleshooting. Develops and implements corrective actions as needed to support operations. Basic Qualifications – Engineer I 1. Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from a college or university accredited by ABET or recognized by ABET as substantially equivalent. Discipline required will vary by the specific job requirements. Preferred Qualifications 1. Internship/co-op in the energy industry or Wastewater treatment preferred.2. Engineer in Training Certificate. Basic Qualifications - Support Engineer 1. Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from a college or university accredited by ABET, or recognized by ABET as substantially equivalent.2. Minimum 2 years related engineering experience.4. Good verbal and written communication skills.5. Strong client-service orientation, ability to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization. Preferred Qualifications 1. Engineer in Training Certificate.2. Experience in the energy or wastewater treatment industry. Basic Qualifications - Senior Engineer 1. Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. Professional Engineer license in the field of Chemical Engineering.2. Minimum 5 years related chemical engineering experience in energy or wastewater treatment.3. Working knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards for the specific position.4. Strong leadership skills and the ability to mentor entry level engineers.5. Project management experience. Preferred Qualifications 1. Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in chemical engineering.2. Professional Engineer, registered in Montana.The successful candidate will possess a valid Driver’s License and will be required to operate company vehicles in the plant area and it the field. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in:Standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, stamina to maintain attention to detail, despite interruptions, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen for long period of time. Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. Plant Operations setting requires working in proximity to wastewater equipment and other plant operations. Outside Field setting that includes traveling to site work locations in all weather conditions. Physical and Mental Demands: The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the plant facilities, including the ability to walk on even and uneven surfaces and the ability to walk up and down stairs throughout the facilities.When at a plant site, noise levels are moderately loud and may vary in various areas of the plant site. When working in an office setting, the noise level is usually quiet.Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.This position requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the plant and field environments. The PPE requirements will include the use of Hard Hats, Safety Toe Boots, Safety Glasses, Gloves, and Hearing Protection where required.Must have manual dexterity and ability to manipulate keyboards.Must be willing to travel in- and out-of-state periodically as needed. Mental Demands: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills, read, and interpret data, information, and documents; analyze and solve complex problems, observe and interpret situations, use math and mathematical reasoning; deal with changing, intensive deadlines, and interact with internal and external clients. Must be able to concentrate while under time constraints.
