Schellinger Construction Paving Superintendent in Columbia Falls, Montana

Job Summary

The Paving Manager is responsible for the management of the company’s paving operation, which encompasses all field operations including laydown, production, maintenance, quality control, people management, coordinating trucks, traffic control, safety, and administration. In addition, the technical knowledge to be able to develop mix designs, and manage volumetrics and compaction to meet specifications is required.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Paving Manager include, but are not limited to:

Operations & Management

  • Manage all operations, processes, and personnel required to complete the asphalt production and paving phases of our projects

  • Have a thorough understanding of each paving project’s plans, including specifications, equipment, manpower, quantities, quality control procedures, materials, safety and security practices, temporary utilities, and staging areas

  • Manage pre-paving processes, including pre-construction conference scheduling; ensuring submittals have been processed; QC monitoring during the crushing phase of aggregate production

  • Ensure materials (e.g. burner fuel, hydrated lime, liquid asphalt) have been ordered and monitor their delivery status

  • Quality specifications: develop asphalt mix designs, and manage volumetrics and compaction processes by troubleshooting any issues to meet specifications

    Communication, Teamwork & Administration

  • Promote a team approach and maintain an open and respectful approach to communication with all employees and project stakeholders

  • Collaborate with both the paving foreman and hot plant foremen to put together daily and weekly plans, including the project’s schedule, job site layout, equipment, production, maintenance, safety, and quality

  • Assist crews when needed e.g. operating paving equipment and hot plant ; set up/teardown of hot plant

  • Manage the performance of the paving crew, which includes: recruiting, new hire orientation, resolving and documenting performance issues, training & development, and providing feedback on their performance

  • Work with the on-site mechanic or shop foreman to prioritize and complete equipment repairs and preventive maintenance

  • Review project productivity and job costs; provide monthly job cost projections

  • Review and approve timecards, meet reporting requirements, and ensures contract compliance

  • Manage change orders and the closeout of projects

    Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure that “Safety First” is understood and demonstrated; conduct weekly safety meetings

  • Enforce and comply with company safety policies, EEO policies, and standard company procedures

  • Attend the annual foreman’s meeting and OSHA training

  • Discuss, document, and address all EEO complaints immediately

  • Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s policies and procedures as outlined in the employee handbook

    Other Requirements

  • 5-10+ years of paving experience

  • Willing to travel

  • As required, willing to work overtime, particularly during the core paving season (April – October)

  • A valid driver’s license and a good MVR is required. CDL not required, but will be viewed favorably

  • Wear appropriate protective equipment on job sites: steel-toed boots, hard hats, ear, and eye protection

  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which will include inclement weather, heat and cold, and exposure to dust and asphalt.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office’s suite of products (Word, Excel, Outlook) is preferred

  • Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
