Schellinger Construction Paving Superintendent in Columbia Falls, Montana

We work primarily in Northwest Montana and provide a full range of services, including earthwork, trucking, gravel crushing, concrete supply, aggregate surfacing, culvert/pipe installation, asphalt paving, and retail aggregate supply (gravel, asphalt) . Job Summary

The Paving Superintendent is a key leader in the company’s paving operations, which encompasses all field operations including laydown, production, maintenance, quality control, people management, coordinating trucks, traffic control, safety, and administration. In addition, technical knowledge around mix properties, and compaction to meet specifications is highly valued. Currently, our working territory encompasses western & central Montana building highway, airport and commercial projects.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Paving Superintendent include, but are not limited to:

Operations

  • Ability to plan and schedule daily paving plans and operations, with Schellinger personnel as well as subcontractors and Inspectors.

  • Scheduling/utilizing the correct paving equipment, trucks and personnel as needed to reach project goals.

  • Ability to read and understand plans and specifications for multiple project types - Highway, Airport, & Commercial projects

  • Experience handling & managing crew and personnel issues that arise.

  • Ability to operate all of the various paving equipment and have a willingness to share and teach others.

  • Be willing to share/teach paving "Best Practices" techniques to crew.

  • Work together with Paving Foreman Paving Manager and Senior Management to improve paving crew efficiency and performance.

    Communication, Teamwork & Administration

  • Promote a team approach and maintain an open and respectful approach to communication with all employees and project stakeholders.

  • Daily, constant communications with asphalt plant personnel related to current and future production goals.

  • Daily communication and coordination with Subcontractors and Inspectors related to short and long term plans.

  • Assist crews when needed e.g. operating paving equipment when needed, set up/tear-down of hot plants.

  • Work with the on-site mechanic or shop foreman to prioritize and complete equipment repairs and preventive maintenance.

    Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure that “Safety First” is understood and demonstrated; conduct weekly safety meetings

  • Enforce and comply with company safety policies, EEO policies, and standard company procedures.

  • Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s policies and procedures as outlined in the employee handbook

    Other Requirements

  • Significant paving experience.

  • Willingness to travel.

  • As required, willing to work overtime, particularly during the core paving season (April – October).

  • A valid driver’s license and a good MVR is required. CDL not required, but will be viewed favorably.

  • Wear appropriate protective equipment on job sites: steel-toed boots, hard hats, ear, and eye protection.

  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which will include inclement weather, heat and cold, and exposure to dust and asphalt.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office’s suite of products (Word, Excel, Outlook) is preferred.

  • Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
