TOWN OF FAIRVIEW Public Works Laborer (CDL) in FAIRVIEW, Montana

Assists in a variety of unskilled labor and maintenance work in construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of City water, sewer, street and storm drainage facilities and systems and city park maintenance. May operate a variety of tools and equipment on a limited basis. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the immediate supervision of the Director' of Public Works. SUPERVISION EXERCISED None ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to the Public Works Director; cleans equipment. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards. Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and back filling. Helps cut, fit, lay, repair, tap, clean and flush water mains, pipe, gates and fittings on repair of mains and services and installation of services, fire hydrants and drinking fountains; assists in shutting off broken sections of water mains. Helps service water supply, sewer lift and other pumps. Performs duties required to maintain the city park including but not limited to mowing, weed trimming, grass planting, tree planting, trimming, using, programming and maintaining the underground sprinkler system. Performs routine grounds maintenance. Performs flagging for street crews. Assists in the annual maintenance and repairs of the city swimming pool. Assists in the repair of chlorine machine, booster pumping stations, reservoir, meters, streets, drainage systems and sewer system to insure that all aspects of the systems are functioning property. Helps contact residents and business owners in area where services will be discontinued and explains when services will be shut off and how soon it will be turned back on. Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use. May operate a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the water, sewer, and street department. Maintain appearance and maintenance of all city buildings, inside and outside as well. Organize shop area and grounds. Complete all work in a timely manner. PERIPHERAL DUTIES Serves on various boards and committees as needed. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience A. Any equivalent combination of education and experience necessary to perform the essential duties of the position. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities A. Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities. B. Some skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment. C. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS State Certified Water / Wastewater operator or able to become water certified within six (6) months and waste water certified within nine (9) months of employment. Valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or able to obtain one within 3 months. CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES & ALCOHOL USE TESTING CDL Employees will be required to be placed in the Random Pool for drug and alcohol testing through WPCI per DOT requirements. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT Motorized vehicles and equipment including garbage truck, large dump truck, vac truck, plow/sander truck, motor grader, loader, back hoe, street sweeper, pickup truck, utility truck, street patcher, lawn mowers (riding and push type), brush hog, park maintenance tools, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and pow r tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone and ditch witch. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
