Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration Registered Nurse (RN) - Surgical in Fort Harrison, Montana

Summary The RN is accountable to the Nurse Manager (NM) of Surgical Services for the completion of his/her assignment, the quality of care given, and the display of professional behavior. Perioperative RNs are responsible for their professional practice to their patients, the perioperative team, the health care organization, and themselves. The RN will work with all levels of Patient Care Services (PCS) Leadership, and all services within the healthcare system. Responsibilities VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package: VA Nurse Total Rewards The RN is responsible for being self-directed, knowledgeable of AORN standards, applicable VHA Directives, and performance measures. The RN practices within the Surgical Services, and under the umbrella of PCS, providing pre/intraoperative care to both inpatient and outpatient Veterans. The patient population served includes all surgical specialties, except cardiothoracic and neurosurgical, as well as patients undergoing endoscopic, cystoscopy, and/or sedation assisted procedures. The RN is responsible for assuring patient preparation for surgery/the care of the patient in the Operating Room (OR). The RN is expected to function proficiently in the circulator and/or scrub roles within the OR and be competent in all surgical specialties served. The RN circulator delegates, supervises, and evaluates the activities of other team members while simultaneously executing immediate directives and interventions in urgent or emergent situations. The RN maintains proficiency in the use of all surgical equipment as well as tissue and implant management. The RN assures the sterility of the surgical field is maintained and all instrumentation related to the surgical procedure is used safely according to manufacturer's guidelines. The RN plans, coordinates, delivers, and evaluates nursing care for patients whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities are potentially compromised during operative or other invasive procedures. Although the RN works collaboratively with other perioperative professionals to meet patient needs, the RN is accountable for the patient outcomes resulting from the nursing care provided during the operative or other invasive procedure. Using clinical knowledge, judgment, and clinical-reasoning skills based on scientific principles, the RN plans and implements nursing care to address the physical, psychological, and spiritual responses of the patient having an operative or other invasive procedure. The RN provides scheduled and emergent cross coverage for inpatient and outpatient diagnostic and therapeutic procedural patient care in the clinical setting of the Special Procedures unit. This unit encompasses both the Endoscopy suite and the Genito-Urinary suite. The RN is responsible for reviewing patient medical history, assuring/assisting with completion of pre-procedural testing, preparation, and pre/post procedural education. The RN is required to function in two separate roles within the Special Procedures unit, as the circulator and the technical assistant to the GI/GU providers during minor procedures and endoscopies. The RN is responsible for monitoring the postprocedural patient who has received intravenous moderate procedural sedation or Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) until transfer to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. The RN applies evidence-based practice while providing care based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling; provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being; and executing medical regimens including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed provider. The RN coordinates patient care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction, and acts as the patient's advocate. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in uniVprogram level quality improvement processes and initiatives, as well as customer service programs. Perioperative RNs participate in policy development and decision making at all levels of the organization. The RN will have communication skills to include self-awareness, conflict management, negotiation, advocacy, listening, and techniques for delivering critical information. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Experience in OR Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, kneeling, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.
