Responsibilities Operate and instruct on the safe operation of engineering and/or construction equipment such as graders, skid steers, mini excavators, and tractors with varying attachments to perform cutting, moving, digging, grading, and trenching. Utilize equipment with masticator heads to complete vegetation treatment projects. Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and inspections on engineering equipment and/or moto vehicles. Coordinate the completion of major equipment and/or vehicle repairs and safety inspections. Assist with the design and draft of project plans and technical schematics. Experience WG-8: The ability to perform safe operation and instruction of engineering/construction equipment such as graders, skid steers, mini excavators, and tractors with varying attachments to perform cutting, moving, digging, grading, and trenching tasks in varying terrain. Skilled in the operation of equipment in moderately steep terrain with some complicating factors such as ditches, gullies, and ravines. Skilled in operating equipment with masticator heads to complete vegetation treatment projects with no direct supervision. Ability to work with a high degree of independence. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is used by the operators in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Because of the location of some of the controls and attachments, the operators are frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions. Work Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather, often in an open driver's seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forests. The operators are exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning. They are subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust. Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.
