State of Montana Behavioral Counselor in Great Falls, Montana

The purpose of this position is to provide guidance to students who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired and deafblind in the residential program. This position provides general guidance to students regarding, social and emotional development, serves as a liaison between families and the Student Life staff, and works as a member of the Campus Support Team (mental health) in dealing with students on behavioral issues and other matters in regards to students on assigned caseload. This position requires working evenings and weekend shifts. Breakdown of Essential Responsibilities: * Planning and Implementing Activities and Life Skills (30%)* * Behavioral and Emotional Counseling (25%)* * Collaborating with Parents and Staff (25%) * Attending Meetings (15%) * Other Duties as Assigned (5%) Planning and Implementing Activities and Life Skills: 30% * Manages all aspects of the Independent Living Skills program for students on caseload. * Assist Residential Advisors with teaching students daily living skills, including self-care, cleaning, laundry, and kitchen safety. * Arrange, organize, and supervise evening and weekend individual and group activities for residential students. This could include activities such as guitar lessons, community recreation programs, hunter’s safety, community events and group events for MSDB students such as Halloween Parties, Christmas Parties, the annual Super Bowl Party and other similar events. Behavioral and Emotional Counseling: 25% * Provide general guidance to deaf, hard of hearing, and visually impaired students, and strategize specific behavioral supports to students who have social, emotional, or behavioral problems. * Assist in the development and implementation of behavioral management programs. * Coordinate individual student and group behavior management and counseling programs with the MSDB Campus Support Team. * Maintain records related to their counseling activities. Collaborating with Parents and Staff: 25% * Serve as a liaison between parents and cottage staff * Work as a member of the residential team in dealing with students on behavioral issues and other matters in regards to students on assigned caseload. * Support and guide the Residential Advisors in dealing with students who are experiencing behavioral problems.* * Communicate with parents regarding student needs, behaviors, successes and concerns. * The counselor provides quarterly reports to parents for students on their caseload. *Attending Meetings: 15% * Gather and present data and information related to the cottage program at IEP, post-observation, and student planning meetings in relation to student performance and social development in the areas of: communication skills, occupational realities, self-image, social and emotional issues, personal hygiene and interpersonal relationships.* * Serve as a member of the Campus Support Team. *All other duties as assigned: 5% * * Minimum qualifications (Education and Experience) * · A Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Behavioral Science, Education of the Visually Impaired, Teacher of the Deaf or other related field. · Three to four years of working with youth is highly desirable. · Experience in working with individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, low-vision or deaf-blind is desirable · Has current driver’s license.
