The Sterile Processing Technician understands the principles of and is responsible for cleaning, disinfecting and/or sterilizing medical supplies, instruments and equipment. Prepares treatment and procedure trays and instruments, and wraps medical devices. Maintains the sterile supply storage room and is responsible for receiving and distributing departmental supplies and equipment. Processes and completes patient charges and credits. Serves as a preceptor for new staff. Covers as an in-charge person in the absence of the Sterile Processing Supervisor. The omission of specific statement of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or is a logical assignment to the position
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Processes all contaminated instruments and supplies returned to Sterile Processing.
Unloads case carts when returned to the decontamination area, cleans and disinfects case carts.
Cleans and decontaminates all equipment and instruments using the proper tools and cleaning agents.
Knowledgeable regarding handling and care of instruments and special procedure items.
Inspects all instruments and equipment for missing parts, items in need of repair. Performs general maintenance of instruments and equipment as needed.
Isolates equipment and instruments in need of repair; reports needed repairs to Supervisor, Sterile Processing.
Performs tray assemblage, proper packaging and preparation of all applicable instruments/equipment/supplies for sterilization. Monitors sterility dates on supplies.
Uses knowledge of sterilization principles to correctly wrap or package items for sterilization.
Ensures proper operation of autoclave units prior to use on a daily basis.
Processes all items appropriately using Sterad or steam sterilization.
Properly loads, operates and cleans all sterilizers, Sterad and steam, and all general equipment using biological and chemical control tests as required by department.
Maintains appropriate spore testing on routine basis and documents results as required.
Applies aseptic techniques in daily work assignments. Performs general cleaning of work surface/areas, sinks, sterilizers, racks, shelves and other storage areas.
Possesses knowledge of and uses personal protective equipment correctly and consistently.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Assists with processing department supply charges and any other clerical work related to the Sterile Processing, as requested.
Works closely with Supervisor, Sterile Processing; assists with orientation for new personnel.
Assists with monitoring and maintaining stock of chemical, linens, peel packs, etc.
Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
Communicates appropriately and clearly to Surgical Services Manager. Sterile Processing Supervisor, Sterile Processing staff, and Hospital staff.
Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
Demonstrates the ability to deal with pressure to meet deadlines, to be accurate, and to handle constantly changing situations.
Demonstrates the ability to deal with a variety of people, deal with stressful situations, and handle conflict.
High School graduate or equivalent.
Prior Sterile Processing Technician experience preferred.
Computer experience preferred.
CRCST required after 2 years experience.
