*Job Summary:*
Responsible for professional government accounting work involving financial controls and functions including assisting with budget development. The nature of the work performed requires that the employee establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with the Chief Financial Officer, Clerk and Recorder, Treasurer, Board of County Commissioners, elected officials, department heads, supervisors, financial institutions, employees, and the general public.

- Travel between Ravalli County buildings is required.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Performs professional level accounting work for the Finance Department
Assists the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with the assembly of the annual budget for the Board of County Commissioners’ approval
Prepares and collects claims (accounts payable), reviews for accuracy on semi-monthly basis and presents to the Board of County Commissioners for approval
Maintains vendor list and collects appropriate documentation
Reconciles and prepares annual Forms 1099
Reconciles, prepares and distributes payroll liability payments, including IRS and State withholding payments and health insurance
Reconciles and prepares quarterly payroll reports due to Federal and State governments
Reconciles and prepares annual Forms W2 and Forms 1095
Works with the County Treasurer to assure monthly tax, motor vehicle and miscellaneous revenues are posted to the accounting program accurately
Distributes investment interest and posts fair market value adjustments of investment accounts monthly
Works closely with school clerk’s/business managers to process cash transfers and to distribute monthly reports (officially a function of the Treasurer’s office)
Prepares annual FP6b report for the Office of Public Instruction (officially a function of the Treasurer’s office)
Maintains fixed asset inventory within Black Mountain Software program and assures accuracy of depreciation calculation
Prepares Annual Financial Report (State requirement) for review by CFO
Prepares audit schedules in formats requested by independent auditing firm
Prepares Annual Financial Statements (for auditor) for review by CFO
Assists the CFO with preparation of the MD&A report attached to annual audited financial statements
Prepares footnotes and required supplementary information within the audited financial statements to explain data and reports
Provides technical accounting assistance to County departmental staff;
Prepares journal entries to maintain general ledger, special ledgers and other accounting records
Coordinates and participates in the classification and distribution of income and expenditures to the proper accounts
Handles special assignments involving accounting systems in County departments and special districts and advises responsible parties in other departments when problems arise
Reads and reviews legal and technical material relevant to governmental accounting
Keeps abreast of Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and other rules affecting governmental accounting and reporting
Reviews general ledger on a monthly basis for proper coding of revenue and expenses
Assists the CFO with the year-end closing
Prepares special reports and projects when requested by management
Coordinates and consults with departments on accounting procedures to accommodate new or changing program needs
Performs related work as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities:

Governmental accounting and auditing principles
State and federal reporting rules and regulations
Principles and practices of accounting and budgeting in government
Montana Code Annotated (MCA) sections relevant to local government accounting and budgeting
Comprehensive knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping
/Skills:/
Proficient in Microsoft Office to include Excel, Word and Outlook
Proficient with ten-key calculator
Organize work to meet all deadlines

Analyze financial data and interpret results for management reports
Prepare complex, summary financial reports, statements, e-mails and memos with technical accuracy using correct grammar, punctuation and spelling
Analyze financial transactions and identify problems relating to accounting/budgeting
Communicate well both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Chief Financial Officer, Clerk & Recorder, County Treasurer, Board of County Commissioners, elected officials, department heads, supervisors, financial institutions, employees, and the general public
Use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions
Perform a wide variety of accounting tasks with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines
Read, understand and interpret laws, regulations, agreements, and resolutions
Retain and recall information regarding accounting systems and reporting requirements
Use computer and calculator accurately and effectively

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor or Associate Degree in Accounting, and three (3) years’ experience in governmental accounting or related field

Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
