Position: Mechanic/Fabricator

Classification: Full Time, Non-Exempt

Department: Road & Bridge

Reports to: Road Foreman

Rate of Pay: $27.56/hour - $2.12/hour deferred to union pension

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Road & Bridge Shop Foreman, the Mechanic position is responsible for performing repairs, scheduled maintenance and service of Road and Bridge Department heavy equipment, heavy and light duty trucks and other equipment, including diesel and gasoline engines, electric, hydraulic and power train systems, power generation, welding and fabrication. Has frequent contact with the Shop Foreman or Road Dept. Supervisor to determine equipment problems.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintains, repairs, services and rebuilds heavy equipment, trucks, vehicles, and equipment.

  • Performs routine and complicated equipment repair and service activities.

  • Performs routine and complicated welding and fabrication activities.

  • Works closely with Shop Foreman and Road Supervisor to schedule equipment for repairs and service.

  • Works closely with Equipment Operators to analyze performance of equipment.

  • Ensures that all equipment and truck repair, maintenance and service activities are performed in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner.

  • Assists in the establishment and implementation of preventative maintenance and schedules for all Road& Bridge Department vehicles, trucks and equipment.

  • Assists in the maintenance of Department facilities and yards.

  • Ensures that all material disposals are consistent with environmental guidelines.

  • Ensures the proper documentation of all completed repair and maintenance.

  • Coordinates purchases with Shop Foreman.

  • Performs Maintenance checks and services on Generators for 911 center, County Detention Facility and County Mental health facility.

  • Assist in tracking of supply usage.

  • Update maintenance records as needed.

  • Assists in road maintenance and construction projects as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of safety regulations, guidelines, and requirements applicable to Road Department operations.

  • Knowledge of engine computer diagnostics and repair.

  • Extensive experience in diesel engine repair.

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of heavy equipment repair and maintenance including diesel, hydraulic, electrical, and power train systems.

  • Experience with a wide variety of road construction equipment including crawler tractors, excavators, heavy trucks, loaders, generators, and related equipment.

  • Extensive experience in welding and fabrication.

  • Minimum three (3) years experience in heavy equipment repair and maintenance.

  • Experience working with power generation equipment.

  • Knowledge of safety regulations and guidelines, personal protective equipment and best management practices applicable to an industrial shop.

  • Ability to communicate well in both verbal and written forms.

  • Ability to accurately complete work orders and other records.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.

  • Ability to interact constructively with various level staff and in a collaborative

    “team” setting.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various

    County departments and other local, state and federal agencies.
  • Must have a valid Montana Driver’s License, CDL required with acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to lift 100 pounds.

Education and Experience:

  • Must be physically able to carry out all requirements of the position in adverse

    conditions relative to weather and terrain.
  • Knowledge of Regulations (OSHA, MSHA, DOT etc.) preferred.

  • Completion of an accredited vocational equipment repair program or equivalent.

  • Completion of high school or GED.

  • Extensive experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment, heavy duty trucks and other vehicles, experience in the practices of industrial safety.

  • ASE certification preferred.

Work Environment:

  • Approximately 90% of time is spent in shop-based repair and service activities; also responds to and performs field-based repairs on a regular basis.

  • Exposure to dust, exhaust, vapors and other potentially hazardous materials.

  • Frequent lifting of heavy or bulky items; working with manual and power tools.

  • Participates in after-hours emergency response activities.

  • Participates in mandatory random drug and alcohol testing program.
