Brief Position Overview
The Business Office strives to partner with Academics and Administration to enable MSU-Northern to achieve the goals specified in its mission statement. The Business Office is accountable for overseeing all financial activity of the University. We will strive to provide the highest quality of service to our students, the University community, prospective students, and vendors. The Accounting Associate III primarily performs accounting, reconciling, reporting and collection functions for the University’s Accounts Receivable. The person in this position records incoming wire transfers and third party payer accounts, and works with student-borrowers on repayment. This position also assists with printing payroll checks, refund checks/direct deposit, and general office coverage. This position also provides coverage for the mail services provided by Business Services.

General Statement

The Business Office is accountable for overseeing all financial activity of the University. The Accounting Associate III primarily performs accounting, reconciling, reporting and collection functions for the University’s Accounts Receivable. The person in this position records incoming wire transfers and third party payer accounts, and works with student-borrowers on repayment. This position also assists with printing payroll checks, refund checks/direct deposit, and general office coverage. This position also provides coverage for the mail services provided by Business Services.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Manages the billing, reporting and collecting of student and non-student receivables including third party billing, tax offset, monthly invoicing and reconciliations.
- Assigning past due accounts to collections companies, ensuring policies and procedures are followed.
- Serve as back-up Cashier (process inter-departmental deposits).
- Assist with accounting and reporting functions of the restricted accounts. Responsible for receiving and disbursing wire transfers and inter-agency journals.
- Prints and runs student refund processes for checks (only Parent Plus Loans & Short-Term Loans) and direct deposits. Will be the backup to print and run payroll processes for checks and direct deposits. Assist the Bookstore’s book buyback program.
- Mailroom services including bulk mailing for all departments, sorting mail, process postage, campus mail, mail machines.
- Assists with general office coverage including customer service and other duties as assigned to assist with efficient operation of the Business Office and multiple offices on campus, including support to co-workers and Student Accounts Manager.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Associate Degree in related field and at least three years office experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge and experience with accounting/bookkeeping principles.
- Demonstrated excellent communication and customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Working knowledge of the Banner system.
- Experience working with A/R .
- Experience organizing and planning work effectively with minimal supervision.
- Experience and knowledge working with a variety of computer programs.
- Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary to work with confidential information.
