Brief Position Overview

The Director of Workforce Education and Training provides leadership and coordination to short-term training programs; to workforce development; and towards maintaining industry partnerships. The Director represents and advances initiatives to students, educators, local elected officials, the media, the general public, business and civic leaders, and workforce development organizations. The Director assists MSU -Northern in educating students to meet local, regional, and state workforce needs. The Director works with other institutional offices to support and to promote the institution’s mission, policies, and strategic goals. The Director works with the Dean, Chair and Career Services to identify potential industry partners, potential off-site faculty, and assists in helping to maintaining good relations with current industry partners.

Position Details

General Statement

The Director of Workforce Education and Training provides leadership and coordination to short-term training programs; to workforce development; and towards maintaining industry partnerships. The Director represents and advances initiatives to students, educators, local elected officials, the media, the general public, business and civic leaders, and workforce development organizations. The Director assists MSU -Northern in educating students to meet local, regional, and state workforce needs. The Director works with other institutional offices to support and to promote the institution’s mission, policies, and strategic goals. The Director works with the Dean, Chair and Career Services to identify potential industry partners, potential off-site faculty, and assists in helping to maintaining good relations with current industry partners.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates short-term training programs with academic, institutional, and industry stakeholders. Oversees and provides leadership for short-term training programs, including but not limited to, Related Training; Accelerated Apprenticeship Training for credit; Apprenticeship programs, educational certificate and credential opportunities leading to A.A.S degrees.

  2. Organizes educational opportunities and strategic planning efforts; collaborates with various educational, governmental, political entities, and companies to advance apprenticeship education and workforce initiatives.

  3. Leads efforts to implement innovative and effective apprenticeship education and workforce initiatives and services. Serves as lead for regional and statewide workforce initiatives. Works with the Department of Labor to expand apprenticeship opportunities.

  4. Maintains regular contact and communications with students, staff, faculty, onsite-instructors, and stakeholders.

  5. Directs and oversees Related Training staff and faculty in their assignments and conduct of their respective responsibilities.

  6. Provides professional development opportunities to department staff to enhance and upgrade skills to meet current demands.

  7. Represents MSU -Northern in a professional manner at all times.

  8. Coordinates the development of a budget for Related Training; monitors expenditures of funds; analyzes data, operational, and management reports; prepares, reviews, and submits reports concerning activities, budget, expenses, and other items affecting program services.

  9. Builds institutional, community, organizational, and industry relationships.

  10. Makes presentations to public and industry groups concerning workforce development; participates in community meetings and other public events that advance the leadership role in workforce development and economic development issues; participates in state, regional, and national meetings, conferences, and training sessions designed to enhance professional knowledge and skills.

  11. Oversees the production and distribution of communications that identify the purpose, goals, and achievements of short-term training and programming, including newsletters, videos, publications, news releases, strategic plans, reports, annual reports, and other relevant communications using the website(s), social media, press releases, and written publications.

  12. Travels to off-campus sites as necessary to meet with potential industry partners and to identify off-site faculty; travels to represent MSU -Northern at state and national events.

Title IX Coordinator

The Title IX Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the University’s compliance with federal and state discrimination and harassment laws, including Title IX.
