Merck Associate Director, Data Sourcing Lead in Helena, Montana

Job Description

Our Company's Global Commercial Human Health division partners with colleagues from across all geographies and divisions to help serve our patients and customers around the world. This position is a “hands-on” management role which is global in nature, working closely with strategy and delivery leaders across divisional and enterprise teams.

The Associate Director will collaborate with the newly developed Human Health Insights, Analytics and Data area to use and apply data in dramatically improved ways to drive greater customer and market understanding to inform launch brand strategies, help meet in-line brand growth objectives, and achieve improved customer engagement. They will be an integral part in helping to drive efficiencies in how we make ‘data-driven’ decisions, leverage that knowledge across the organization, and be more relevant to the customer.

The preferred candidate will have an entrepreneurial spirit, strong understanding of healthcare & technology, knowledge of and ability to identify & use new customer data sources to influence marketing strategy and identify opportunities in these key growth areas. They will have demonstrated consistently strong leadership skills, an ability to work independently and deal well with ambiguity and strong collaboration skills. They will empower a growth mindset and inspire a culture of continual learning. This role will require interfacing and collaborating with many teams so strong communication skills is a must.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Understand an external data landscape - discovery of external assets and provide harmonized interface for stakeholders across the organization.

  • Collaborating cross-functionally across various groups within the organization where internal data landscapes workstreams are under ways.

  • Lead partnerships with relevant stakeholders and cross functional leaders across the organization.

  • Develop and implement a standard practice and workflow with all third-party data and analytics vendors.

  • Main point of contact for stakeholders’ data needs and matching them with the data available within the data landscape.

  • Liaise with the IT and Chief Data Office organizations, as well as with other data roles across the company to maximize transparency and value for the company.

  • Collaborate and partner with BIMs and business stakeholders to identify, share and lead the sourcing of externally available data sources based on the business needs, and execution of specific business objectives.

  • Build third party vendor relationship and continuously partner with vendors to explore data needs, perform data assessments, build data evaluations and identify cutting edge innovative datasets.

  • Understand, communicate and ensure proper consideration of ethical and privacy constraints linked to the use of the industry relevant data.

  • Ability to effectively communicate and influence senior stakeholders.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strategic understanding in information technologies and systems and their applications (e.g. the integration of process and analytical data, reference data management, visualization tools and equipment and workflow automation).

  • General understating of assembling, analyzing, and visualizing complex data sets (e.g. Spotfire, Power BI).

Education Minimum Requirements:

  • A minimum of BS (or equivalent) in Data Science, Computer Science, IT or an equivalent scientific discipline, a prolonged, intimate relationship with data, a strategic mindset and fearless attitude towards administrative barriers and legal terms.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Self-motivation, proactivity and ability to work independently with minimum direction. Proven knowledge of business processes and industry/market trends within the pharmaceutical space.

  • Excellent business acumen, with proven ability to understand business processes in detail – both at global and region/country levels – and translate these into user stories and detailed business requirements.

  • Proven leadership and negotiation skills, along with good analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, along with the ability to communicate appropriately and confidently with colleagues from different backgrounds and seniority levels.

  • Excellent organizational skills, with ability to navigate a complex matrix environment and organize/prioritize work efficiently and effectively.

  • Previous experience with data curation and management in a relevant life-science sector (pharmaceutical, academic or healthcare).

  • Proven track record of successful completion of multi-stakeholder projects necessitating coordination cross-functionally between several departments including IT, legal/IP and contracting and procurement.

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical research and development. Conceptual understanding of health care/life sciences data (EMR, claims)

  • Fully translate to the stakeholders the real need of the data in order to realize the value and/or benefit to the franchise.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Hands on coding experience in Python/R/Scala/Java or any other OOP; ETL using SQL/shell scripting.

  • 2 years of relevant experience in the Healthcare industry.

  • Experience using cloud-based SQL & noSQL databases (Redshift, BQ, Athena, Mongo, so on).
