State of Montana Bridge Operations Engineer in Helena, Montana

TheMontana Department of Transportation (MDT)is recruiting for a/Bridge Operations Engineer/. This position serves as the Bridge Operations Engineer and supervisor of the Bridge Operations Unit which is responsible for bridge analysis and load rating, bridge overload permitting, and bridge maintenance for over 5000 bridges in-service statewide. This position is responsible for ensuring public safety; maintaining program compliance with Federal laws, policies and guidelines; developing and monitoring statewide operations and budget estimates; developing and managing engineering contracts for consultant services and construction of rehabilitation and repairs of bridges; supervising staff work and quality; and promoting efficient and cost effective use of Department resources and funds. This work directly affects public safety and commerce and an advanced level of professional engineering experience is needed to identify and evaluate bridge conditions, perform advanced structural analysis for the current conditions, and recommend load posting, traffic restrictions, or repair projects. Incumbants with PE registration in another State that are eligible for PE registration in Montana through Comity will be considered. This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire. * * *Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:* KNOWLEDGE * This position requires a thorough and extensive knowledge of the theory, principles, methods and techniques of Civil Engineering and the associated mathematics and physical sciences, especially the methods and practices of bridge structural analysis. * This position must be familiar with AASHTO Design and Load Rating Specifications and standards, MDT design and load rating standards and policies, industry guidelines and practices, and bridge and road construction methods. SKILLS * This position requires skill in effective team building techniques; effective written and verbal communications; organizing, directing and supervising professional and paraprofessional personnel; dealing tactfully with the public and with governmental officials; skill in project management, planning and organizing. This position must have demonstrated skills at performing engineering analyses and applying engineering concepts, techniques and procedures to a variety of situations and circumstances. This position must be skilled at evaluating structural problems by examining evidence, discussions with peers and inspection personnel , reviewing calculations and contract documents to determine proper course of action; and skill in drawing conclusions and making recommendations based on ambiguous or conflicting information. This position requires skill in applying engineering judgment when interpreting design guidelines and standards;preparing calculations, reports, and other documentation necessary to complete inspection, repair, maintenance, and design projects. Effective writing and verbal communication skills are necessary.
