Job Description:

SUMMARY

GAF is becoming more proactively engaged in project sustainability within the commercial roofing community. Through involvement with consultants, specifiers, architects, large developers, building owners, and other industry-related professionals, we will provide significant technical advice and guidance in their decision-making process. The Commercial Sustainable Design Manager will leverage their expertise in the field to provide education and technical guidance about sustainable roofing system design, best practice, and product specifications at the key specifier and national accounts level.

This role will provide customer specific sustainability guidance and education, acting as a point person for sustainability related project inquiries, bridging the gaps between product management, sales, and the more generalist technical support hot-line. The Manager will lead others to solve complex project related sustainability problems through sophisticated analysis and thought leadership, and will directly impact customer and project success in achieving sustainability goals. As part of the Building and Roofing Science Team, this position will communicate difficult concepts, providing technical literacy around sustainability to project teams, and be highly visible across the company and the industry.

The team has 3 overarching objectives:

Innovate: Conduct research on building & roofing science performance with respected 3rd party entities. Share our findings to continually improve the industry.

Connect and Lead: Provide thought leadership to architects, specifiers & roof consultants through industry presentations (including research findings), GAF Building & Roofing Science Events, and publications in industry journals, magazines and blogs.

Evolve: Focus on engagement during the design phase of projects by providing technical support to our sales team and their customers

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Liaise directly with the project team’s architects, owners, and contractors to support design efforts and required documentation for sustainable and green building certification projects. Deliver innovative roof design solutions to help our customers make informed decisions around the carbon footprint of their building. Responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Commercial team to facilitate customer project sustainability goals and documentation, including compliance with and promotion of green building program requirements including LEED and other third-party certification programs

  • Assist project teams in design solutions around embodied and operational carbon and evaluate tradeoffs for roof system options to demonstrate the impact of alternative measures to the project.

  • Collaborate and support sustainable strategies and energy optimization services to architects and owners/developers.

  • Provide Thought Leadership surrounding roof sustainability through development of educational content shared within the industry via presentations at national conferences, hosting educational events for our customers, publications in industry magazines, etc.

  • Participate and hold leadership roles in sustainability focused industry associations such as ASHRAE, USGBC, AIA’s COTE, LEED, ILFI, etc.

  • Articulate GAF’s sustainability platform as well as building science principles to project teams

  • Collaborate with the Building Science Innovation Team on research related to building sustainability, and embodied and operational carbon

  • Inform and collaborate with the Product Sustainability Specialist on product certification plans

  • Develop and provide training for the sales team on sustainability related topics so they can be conversant with their customers

Technical knowledge/skills intermediate to advanced):

  • Credential(s) in one or more green building program, LEED AP, Green Globes Professional, etc.

  • Knowledgeable and passionate for sustainable building strategies and systems, resilience, and energy efficiency

  • Proficiency in reviewing construction drawings for architectural details and specifications

  • Extensive knowledge of roofing systems and their interaction with the building envelope is preferred

General knowledge/skills intermediate to advanced):

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills - verbal, written, and interpersonal. Ability to present complex technical knowledge in a compelling way to a non-technical audience.

  • Good customer relationship skills. This position works closely and collaboratively with the commercial team as well as external customers like designers, developers, general contractor, and roof contractors

  • Ability to maintain one's own schedule and tasks independently with a friendly, outgoing, and enthusiastic attitude

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Sustainability or related degree

  • Minimum five years of experience with building projects, green building certification processes, and a comprehensive understanding of building science
