Tableau’s Office of the CDO is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering. The candidate should have an extensive background in leading the delivery of federated, scalable, and robust enterprise data solutions that enable data-driven business strategy. This is a leadership role reporting to the VP of Data & Insights and is responsible for delivering the Tableau telemetry service. The telemetry service is critical to both Tableau Product and Operational improvement strategies.
The Director of Engineering will lead the Telemetry team and is responsible for the Telemetry vision, strategy, and tactical decisions. This includes the Telemetry service, data stores, analytics solutions, and telemetry instrumentation and governance strategies. The Director will manage the day-to-day aspects of the telemetry team including design, architecture, features, instrumentation guidance with internal partners and with executives. This leader will also own people management, general guidance, and career mentorship aspects of the team including directing work assignments, portfolio roadmaps, influencing the balance of scope-budget-timelines, customer communications, strategic planning, and demonstrating agile expertise with functional-technical-operational processes are some of the other key capabilities for this role.
The Director of Engineering - Telemetry will manage a team focused on building and delivering improvements to our Telemetry platform, and its distributed tracing capabilities, while executing within AWS and Snowflake footprints to scale for the increasing consumption patterns and actionability of our teams’ output. The leader will work closely with, and help influence, other engineers, user research, quants, data engineers, teams, and management to define, develop, and deliver using Tableau’s telemetry platform libraries, web services, data lakes, and Warehouses. The Director will leverage the organization, influence, and demonstrate communication skills to build recommendations to improve our product and processes and align other people and teams with these goals. While innovating for new features and improvements, the team must also ensure the smooth operation of existing systems, balancing resources dynamically between these two priorities.
Some of the other things you will be doing include:
Lead and support the Telemetry platform engineering team, helping to take the ideas from initial phases to implementation.
Work closely with product management and refine the requirements
Partner with GovComm to define telemetry retention, access control, and data handling standards
Collaborate closely with internal partners to enable Data by Design telemetry that fuels business strategy
Collaborate cross-functionally with other product management, user research, user interface, design, and support teams to build a cohesive strategy for Tableau’s analytics needs
Earn the trust of your team, and challenge them to grow
Lead engineering discussions and mentor others on technical implementation, engineering best practices, and career development
Work with other leaders in product engineering to leverage and improve our design system and overall architecture
Know when to lead from the front, and when to step back and let others take the reins
Collaborating with members of your team and others, bringing together the best ideas, and pushing back on the others
Influence key outcomes around product performance, strategy, and practices
Play a pivotal role in building and improving our engineering standards, best practices, and rigor
Provide guidance and support across multiple teams of highly skilled engineers
Contribute and work towards reshaping our telemetry ecosystem tools, interfaces, and systems into a highly reliable and available service offering
Advocate on behalf of internal users and solve for their usability concerns in our tooling
Investigate and research infrastructure tooling issues, resolving the issue and making recommendations for future solutions
Design and expand on our teams' ability to provide scaled telemetry, distributed tracing, and product / behavioral intelligence solutions to all of Tableau
Providing technical guidance and contributing to the vision and architecture of Telemetry, distributed tracing, Product Intelligence, and Product Usage Analytics at Tableau
Required Skills & Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, MIS, STEM, IT or related discipline or equivalent experience
12+ years of professional experience in solution delivery, architecture, vendor management, and people management in the data services domain
Function independently and as part of a team under aggressive deadlines in a (really) fast-paced environment, convey a strong professional image, exhibit interest and positive attitude toward all assigned work, and strive for continued improvement
Experience managing developers’ full-stack teams.
Understanding and knowledge of c++, java, typescript, python, AWS Services, Kafka, Snowflake, and DevOps practices such as CI/CD
Ability to work effectively and manage partnerships with all areas and members of the business as well as all levels of the organization.
Thought leadership, a curiosity of business and engineering processes, and drive to keep pace with the new and emerging trends, technologies, and innovations.
Experience with Agile/Scrum development methodologies Technical expertise and evidence of mastery in implementing BI/Analytics/Big Data solutions.
Experience in budgeting, project structuring, vendor and partner management, staff structuring, and negotiations.
Strong situational analysis, negotiation, and decision-making abilities.
Excellent spoken and written communication as well as receptive listening skills, with the ability to present complex ideas in a clear, concise fashion to technical and non-technical audiences.
Impressive presentation skills and experience communicating and convincing audiences from analysts to senior leaders and C-suite.
For Colorado-based roles: Minimum annual salary of $158,000 base salary. You may also be entitled to receive bonus, restricted stock units, and benefits.
