Museum Facilities Specialist JobAnnouncement The Montana Historical Society (MTHS) seeks an energetic and talented candidate for the full-time position of Facilities Specialist. We are growing – creating a world-class Heritage Center that will be a destination, a gathering place, and a space to tell the stories of Montana to all. The Montana Historical Society saves Montana’s past, shares our stories, and inspires exploration, to provide meaning for today and vision for tomorrow. We are looking for an individual that will contribute to that mission by ensuring exhibit spaces are clean and safe for our world-class art and artifact collection, while also enjoyable for our guests. Function: The Museum Program is responsible for exhibit and storage areas in multiple buildings that contain art and artifact collections. Due to the sensitive nature and specialized function of the exhibits, this position performs work that is unique in relation to the rest of Montana Heritage Center facilities. The Museum Facilities Specialist ensures that these spaces are both safe for MTHS collections and functional for MTHS guests through daily inspection, regular cleaning and proactive maintenance. Representative Duties: · Performs daily and semi-regular cleaning of exhibit surfaces, artifact cases, and floors to ensure the space is presentable to guests. · Monitors all elements of exhibits (ie: lighting, graphics, interactives, A/V features, artifacts), looking for any damage and ensuring they function as intended. Monitors spaces to ensure safety/security of all displayed art and artifacts. · Performs repair and corrects problems as needed and/or coordinates with appropriate parties. Documents issues and steps taken to correct or mitigate. · Collaborates with Museum staff to set the cleaning and maintenance schedule; sticks to the schedule and documents completion, creating a permanent record of tasks completed. · Dusts art and artifacts as directed, with special attention given to the Original Governor’s Mansion and the Capitol Complex. · Supports all phases of exhibit planning, fabrication, installation and deinstallation. · Assists with cleaning and maintenance tasks in all artifact storage areas. · Assists with the movement of large objects; supports collections care initiatives as needed. · Maintains adequate supplies to accomplish regular tasks. · Communicates to guests when working in public-facing spaces; document concerns, gather feedback, answer questions, report feedback to appropriate parties when necessary. · Supervises non-MTHS individuals and groups working in museum facilities when supervision is needed. Investigates, identifies needs and makes recommendation for equipment and supplies, and provides budget information as needed · Ability to work independently or as part of a team. Willingness to collaborate with team members. Open to feedback from other expertise to consider accessibility and inclusivity, cultural sensibilities, and museum standards. · Willing to assist with all Museum Program initiatives; ability to take direction from multiple team members depending on the initiative. · Knowledge of cleaning techniques, methods, procedures, and materials; knowledge of (or willingness to learn) how those techniques, methods, procedures, and materials are adapted in a museum setting. · Strong attention to detail; careful and deliberate in all actions when art and artifacts are in proximity. · Skill in safely operating hand and small power tools. Knowledge of tools and equipment, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. · Effective time management, leadership, and organizational skills. · Takes initiative, applies problem solving skills, and can multi-task. · Skilled at maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other state agencies and the public. Strong customer service skills displayed when working in view of the public. · Ability to endure moderate physical activity with occasional strenuous activity required. This includes: standing for long periods of time, climbing stairs, moving and climbing large ladders, lifting and moving artifacts, which range from small, delicate items to heavy, awkward objects, and lifting and moving exhibit cases and displays. · Basic computer skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Office software. Qualifications: Qualifications include Associate degree in a technical, trade, or related field. One year of experience troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, and technical systems. Other combinations of education and experience may be substituted. Background in Montana History a plus. Previous experience working in museum settings a plus.
