State of Montana Hospital Systems Surveillance Epidemiologist (07164) in Helena, Montana

The Hospital Systems Surveillance Epidemiologist studies the occurrence of disease and other health-related conditions or events in defined populations to implement prevention and control measures. This position is responsible for managing and analyzing the Montana Hospital Discharge Data System and the state’s syndromic surveillance system and provides epidemiology support to public health programs throughout the Division. Responsibilities include: 1) Analyzing surveillance data such as health indicators, risk factors, and disease surveillance information; 2) Maintain the Montana syndromic surveillance system by onboarding new reporting facilities and monitoring data quality; 3) Design, coordinate, and manage syndromic surveillance queries during emerging disease events; 4) Develop and conduct various trainings related to hospital system surveillance, and epidemiological or program evaluation issues; and 5) Design and conduct program evaluations. In addition to employee benefits, there are a wide range of advancement opportunities within the largest state agency in Montana What You Can Offer Us * Skill in programming in Statistical Analysis System (SAS), Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), or R statistical software. * Ability to manipulate and analyze large, complex data sets. * Skill in descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. * Ability to identify relationships and trends in data as well as factors that could affect the results of research. * Ability to identify problems, researching to develop and implement solutions. * Ability to combine pieces of information to form conclusions. * Skill in public speaking. * Excellent written and oral communication skills for a variety of audiences. * Skill in writing technical reports or grants. * Meet minimum qualifications: o Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Statistics, or a closely related degree. o Three years of job-related experience in epidemiology. o Experience in managing large complex data sets preferred. o Other combinations of directly related education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
