State of Montana Human Resources Generalist 2 in Helena, Montana

MTHS has an opening for a full-time Human Resources Generalist 2. This position serves as the agency’s Human Resources office lead. The person sought for this position will be a positive representative of Montana Historical Society to the public, have depth of experience in human resources, and will embody the MTHS culture of excellence, teamwork, professionalism, and passion for the work that we do. The ideal candidate is a motivated, energetic team member who loves human resources, enjoys providing recruitment, job classification and employment relations support to MTHS’s programs, embraces the position’s role in leading an office of 1 FTE Human Resources Assistant and is excited to be a part of the behind-the-scenes HR efforts that support the Montana Heritage Center opening in Fall 2025 and ongoing operations of MTHS. Function: The Human Resources office is one of six sections within the Administration Program of the Montana Historical Society. Under the direction of the Administrator, this position provides strategic and HR operational expertise in delivering HR services for MTHS. Among other tasks, the ability to exercise sound judgment, be detail orientated, have great time management skills, along with a welcoming and friendly attitude, is important to this position. Other: The Human Resources Generalist 2 will work a 40-hour a week schedule, Monday through Friday. This position is not eligible for telework. Representative Duties: * Provide operational HR expertise and solutions using a comprehensive understanding of a variety of HR functional areas. * Address employee relations issues, such as harassment allegations, work complaints, or other employee concerns. * Write job descriptions, classify positions within guidelines established as a trained classifier, write job vacancy announcements, and determine appropriate salary levels. * Review, screen, participate on interview panels, or coach managers regarding effective recruitment and selection techniques. * Gather employee feedback, and make organizational recommendations based on data gathered. * Provide management with information or formal training regarding HR topics, such as interviewing, performance appraisals, counseling techniques, or documentation of performance issues. * Develop and implement employee communication plans and methods associated with organizational changes and/or HR processes, such as new employee onboarding. * Research, interpret, and explain human resources policies, procedures, laws, standards, or regulations for the agency. * Conduct investigations, write reports, and make recommendations based on conclusions. * Gather relevant data and metrics, provide insightful analysis in support of decision making and recommend appropriate solutions. * Consult and coach managers regarding the impact of potential decisions on the workforce and managerial effectiveness. * Educate and coach management on proper disciplinary procedures in adherence with policy, and write documents associated with the process. * Establish, implement, and maintain human resources policies, procedures, and practices. Skills: * Thorough knowledge of human resource principles, laws and practices and understands how to utilize State of Montana systems and procedures. * Excellent oral and written communication skills. * Effective time management and organizing skills. * Takes initiative, applies problem solving skills, and can multitask. * Likes to work both independently and collaboratively with the HR Assistant, Administrator and Director. * Extensive experience with Microsoft Office programs. Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in human resources, organizational development or related field and a minimum of two years of human resources experience. Experience with State of Montana government human resources is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
