Summary What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 1 year that may be extended for 1 additional year (24 months total) without further competition. Salary: $103,409 (Step 01) to $134,435 (Step 10) NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Responsibilities As a Hydrologist within the Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: Prepares investigative project proposals and develops work plans and protocols which include consideration of previous experimental and theoretical analyses, evaluation of all available data from various sources, and the development and adaptation of procedures and methods of investigation. Identifies, clarifies, defines, and expresses otherwise diffuse and obscure hydrologic problems and needs using the insight gained from extensive knowledge and experience. Serves as consultant and advisor to supervisors and other scientists of the office on matters pertaining to specialized knowledge and assists in training inexperienced personnel in areas of expertise including techniques of data collection and analysis. Participates in meetings, and cooperates with other members of WRD, colleges, universities, industrial organizations, other Federal and State agencies, private consultants, and professional societies to obtain and exchange information. Determines the overall nature, scope, and approach for water-resources investigations that will most effectively address identified hydrologic problems and needs. This includes evaluation and determination of alternative approaches, data-collection methods, and analytical procedures to assure that project objectives will be met and that results will be valid and reliable. Writes clear, timely, and authoritative interpretive technical articles and reports that document the objectives, scope, approach, results, and conclusions of water-resource investigations or selected elements of such investigations. Plans, directs, and/or carries out complex scientific studies or significant components of very large studies, that describe and interpret hydrologic conditions in order to define, analyze, forecast, or describe both natural and human-induced hydrologic changes in the area. Investigative subjects include the hydrology of groundwater and surface-water systems and the water quality of those systems, the nature of surface-water/ground-water interconnections, testing of aquifer hydraulic properties, mapping of geologic formations, and surface geophysical techniques. Conduct of these investigations requires application of a high degree of mature professional judgment as well as advanced analytical methods. Qualifications BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-13: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original hydrologic studies or ongoing hydrologic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Hydrologists have extensive knowledge of the principles of hydrology and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
