State of Montana Materials Lab Lead Technician #40036 in Helena, Montana
This position serves as aMaterials Laboratory Lead Workerfor the Physical Testing Section of the MDT Materials Bureau. The position is responsible for directing various materials testing processes to ensure the quality, consistency, and efficiency of materials lab operations, to ensure that materials comply with specifications, and to provide information and consultation for the development and application of materials; planning and conducting materials testing and analysis projects; and is lead worker of Materials Laboratory in the Physical Testing Section. The position reports to the assigned Unit Supervisor (40031 or 40023).
Materials Testing Oversight
Coordinate various materials testing processes to ensure the quality, consistency, and efficiency of materials lab operations, that materials comply with specifications, and provide information and consultation for the development and application of materials.
Plan and conduct materials testing and analysis projects and operations to determine the compliance of materials used in structures and roadways.
Provide lead worker oversight of staff to ensure unit testing activities are effectively performed by qualified personnel and to ensure compliance with applicable personnel regulations and collective bargaining agreements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
This position requires knowledge of materials inspection and testing principles and practices; the properties and characteristics of a variety of materials; laboratory testing protocols and procedures; highway construction methods and techniques, a variety of site specific circumstances and their impacts (soils, temperature, weather conditions, gradations, segregation, stability, flows, additives, absorption rates, etc.); safety practices and procedures; state, federal, AASHTO, FHWA, and ASTM standards and project specifications; the Montana Materials manual; material specifications; testing equipment diagnosis and repair; project administration; supervisory principles and practices; collective bargaining agreements; training and professional development principles; and technical writing.
This position requires skill in planning and coordinating materials testing projects; analyzing and interpreting technical test results; adapting testing methods and techniques to meet various material and project circumstances; and in operating a variety of testing equipment and general office equipment including a personal computer and associated business applications.
The required knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology, Construction, or a related field from an accredited college or university.If the applicant is using education to meet minimum qualifications, they must attach copies of transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable).
This position requires three years of progressively responsible experience in materials laboratory testing for highway and bridge construction and project management.
Other acceptable fields of study include: Chemistry, Mathematics, Physical or Environmental Science, etc.
Alternative Qualifications: Any current or former MDT employee that holds (or successfully held) a Band 4, Level 2 Materials Inspection Technician position, which includes five (5) years of experience in materials laboratory testing for highway bridge construction.
