The Boeing Company is seeking a Metrology Engineer to join the Boeing Test & Evaluation team, working in the Metrology and Test Equipment Services (MATES) group in Helena, MT . The successful candidate will join a geographically dispersed and multidisciplinary metrology engineering team that is responsible for developing and supporting measurement solutions in support of advanced manufacturing, and test & evaluation activities.

This position will support the metrology engineering teams and the associated calibration labs within MATES along with representing the organization as a technical expert across Boeing and to external organizations.

MATES provide a full spectrum of test asset and metrology services and support for internal customers and products through all phases of the product lifecycle. Services include calibration/certification for a diverse population of measurement and test equipment across various measurement parameters consisting of more than 600,000 measurement and test assets (e.g. dimensional/optics and mechanical/physical), sourcing management, measurement solutions, repair & maintenance, test asset selection and use, acquisition, allocation, resource and lifecycle management, and specialized test services.

MATES is comprised of engineers, technicians and administrative personnel who support programs, sites, business units and external/government customers by providing best value test asset management and metrology services through all phases of the product lifecycle.

This position is primarily for 1st shift; however, various shifts, nights, weekends and alternate shifts may be required to meet program objectives.

Our teams are currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including; Associate and Mid-Level Metrology Engineers

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develops metrology measurement solutions for multiple parameters, to include in lab and In-situ. Examples include machines such as Coordinate Measurement Machines as well as parameters of force, torque, dimensional, pyro and pressure. To the extent that this requires the skills in research, design, development, improvement, and implementation of processes to enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of existing calibration solutions

  • Applies core Metrology Engineering concepts such as: uncertainty analysis, reliability analysis, new measurement techniques, and specification interpretation

  • Leads projects under consultative direction and defines, negotiates, and controls the scope, cost, and timing of projects, including performance of risk analysis using project management tools

  • Gather and analyzes, processes, and formats data for measurement and test equipment calibrations to meet customer requirements

  • Respond to production and customer related issues concerning calibration/certification and lead initiatives to influence multi-functional improvements

  • Support Metrology process knowledge sharing, both within the organization and with the business partners

  • Applies established Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) method and techniques to apply lessons learned to the improvement of test procedures/methodologies

  • Evaluate and prepare Metrology lab M&TE procurement justification packages

  • Design/develop calibration system/test fixtures, data processing tools, and algorithms

  • Use calibration standards to calibrate, adjust, certify, maintain, and repair M&TE/process equipment using approved calibration procedures, process specifications, equipment drawings, and M&TE /process equipment manufacturer's performance specifications

  • Plan, check, set up, and operate Measurement and Test Equipment (M&TE) and/or process equipment

  • Conduct routine tests, data validation and document results using established Metrology practices and calibration procedures

  • Troubleshoot and recommend resolution of basic laboratory and test-related problems

  • Update equipment status using established systems and complete associated paperwork

  • Prioritize and perform work according to automated daily report list

  • Perform visual check of M&TE/process equipment for discrepancies and wear

  • Identify, document, and route non-conforming items in accordance with metrology lab processes

  • Provide information and clarification to customers on metrology processes

  • Work with other employees engaged in the calibration and certification of M&TE, and assist in the development of new calibration processes and procedures

  • Perform computations necessary to analyze measurement test results

  • Perform tasks associated with Test Asset Management and Property Management including asset tagging, redeployment, storage and surplus

  • Perform logistics associated with routing calibrated assets to remote Boeing labs and suppliers for calibration services

  • Archives data and reports

  • Works under general direction

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet export control compliance requirements. To meet export control compliance requirements, a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.15 is required. “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

  • 1+ years of experience in Metrology and/or measurement science

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 3 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 3+ years of experience in metrology or calibration/certification

  • 3+ years of experience developing and executing test procedures

  • 3+ years of experience using any of the following Measurement & Test Equipment (M&TE): Torque tools, torque transducers, load cells, scales, pressure gauges, flow meters, Super micrometers, Universal measurement machines, temperature & humidity chambers, multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators

  • 3+ years of experience performing statistical analysis

  • 3+ years of experience in quality, lab test, or metrology

  • 1+ years of experience in project management

Typical Education/Experience:

Associate (Level 2)

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Mid-Level (Level 3)

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary pay range level 2: $70,550 – $95,450

Summary pay range level 3: $85,000 – $115,000
