Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Post Doc Research Associate – Optimization and Machine Learning of Energy Systems in Helena, Montana

Responsibilities

The Postdoc Research Associate will primarily work with PNNL staff on developing advanced distributed optimization and machine-learning based algorithms for solving multi-level optimization problems (linear, non-linear, and mixed-integer) arising in a variety of energy and power system applications. The work will involve mathematical modeling, system identification, algorithm design, theoretical analysis, simulation, and large-scale computational experimentation to solve high-dimensional design optimization problems with coupled system dynamics and black-/white-box system models. The candidate is expected to engage in dissemination of technical results through active participate in preparing technical reports and peer-reviewed publications in top Operations Research, AI/ML, and Control venues.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong background in nested and hierarchical optimization arising in black-box problem settings

  • Strong background in data-driven AI/ML based distributed methods for solving large-scale dynamical optimization problems

  • Expert proficiency with optimization solvers, including Gurobi, CPLEX, and IPOPT

  • Experience in power or energy systems modeling and simulation

  • Experience in computational sciences and some proficiency in high-performance computing is a plus

  • Ph.D. in Operations Research, Computer Science, Computational Sciences, or related field
