Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Power Systems Engineer - Data Analytics in Helena, Montana

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division (EIBD) is one of PNNL’s most innovative teams, working at the forefront of some of America’s toughest energy challenges, employing multi-disciplinary teams to solve national-scale problems. Within EIBD, the Electricity Security Group (ESG) is internationally recognized for innovative and impactful research focusing on creating a secure, reliable, resilient, efficient, and flexible modernized power system. As part of the ESG team, you can help drive the future of our national energy system.

Responsibilities

The Electricity Security Group is currently looking for a Power Systems Research Engineer with a strong background in power system data and analysis; power system operations; and modern software development practices to join our Electricity Security team. The position will focus on leading the development of cutting-edge analysis applications, designing and testing of real-time applications, and evaluating the impact of new technologies and weather on bulk power system operations. This role will directly support the development of real-world applications for improving the performance, efficiency, and resilience of our nation’s power system.

The desired candidate will:

  • Work with colleagues and external collaborators to develop innovative solutions to emerging challenges facing the power industry.

  • Demonstrate relevant technical domain knowledge with a focus on power system analytics, algorithms and/or optimization for power system planning and operations.

  • Assist the development of new business by contributing to new research ideas and proposals.

  • Contribute to the development of technical strategies.

  • Effectively communicate with senior engineers to ensure high-quality delivery of research projects on budget and on time.

  • Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, etc.

  • Mentor and direct junior staff in various projects.

  • Present and promote PNNL research agenda and products in professional communities, e.g., IEEE, CIGRE, industry workshops, etc.

  • Demonstrate the upmost professional integrity.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA with 2 years of experience

  • MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience

  • PhD with 0 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in meteorology, atmospheric science, environmental resources engineering, electrical engineering, operations research, environmental science or statistics.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, critical thinking skills, and the ability to work in a team environment are necessary.

  • Background in energy forecasting, time series analysis, and conversion of meteorology to solar and wind power timeseries is highly desirable.

  • Research or project experience in the field of energy and environment, understanding of engineering concepts related to energy systems, and programming experience (particularly in R or Python or similar) are a strong plus.
