As a Senior Data Visualization Designer in the Carelon Digital Health Platforms design group you’ll bring your strong design, problem solving, and storytelling skills to deliver compelling visualizations that make complex data understandable, approachable, and actionable for a new generation of data-intensive, digital products used by healthcare professionals, practices, and patients . 

We seek to make interactive data visualizations a crucial tool to help individuals improve the healthcare of their patients, loved-ones, and themselves. In this role, you’ll spend at least 80% of your time creating and iterating on interactive, real-time data visualizations that are very approachable, yet also have the necessary depth to help people understand complex data to improve peoples’ health.

In this role, you’ll play a leading role in the “what and how” that users see, touch, and experience for these next generation, AI-driven healthcare tools. You love to dive deep into new spaces - understanding the data and how it relates to the user, their motivations and how things work in their realities. You equally love to explore a wide range of concepts, collaborating with your cross-functional team to quickly iterate, validate, and refine ideas together. You view constraints as opportunities and are organized, flexible, and a motivated self-starter who is comfortable working in short iterations. You have a track record of working in diverse environments and - ideally - on successful early to emerging-stage projects. You must be comfortable working with projects that are evolving quickly.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of relevant work experience and/or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience/training along with a portfolio that shows:

Preferred:

  • Superb storytelling with complex data for both professionals and consumers/lay-people

  • Experience building successful visualizations with live data sets.

  • Flexibility in your ability to work at the appropriate level of visual fidelity (thumbnailing, sketching, wireframing, designing, and pixel-perfect polishing).

  • The ability to work comfortably in a wide array of styles

  • Rapid visualization skills for quickly generating, iterating, and visually pitching your ideas as concept sketches, storyboards, etc.

  • Great foundational visual design skills (e.g.; layout, grid systems, composition, typography, color) that show mastery in presenting complex visual information with awareness for information hierarchy, flow and context, including states and transitions.

  • Experience working with massive, high frequency data sets and determining the appropriate level of fidelity and accuracy to ensure maximum impact without sacrificing data/information integrity.

  • Ability to remain faithful to project’s creative direction regardless of style, technology, platform, or user demographics.

  • And while not a requirement, illustration or motion graphics are a bonus.

  • Though you will likely have familiarity and or experience with off-the-shelf software packages such as Tableau or Power BI, you must have strong experience building visualizations without the reliance on them

  • Strong ability to work with Javascript, R, CSS, HTML5 and/or d3.js

  • Ability to clean and analyzing data (using R, Python, Node, SQL, Stata, or others) for live prototypes

  • Experience with Machine Learning and/or AI experience is a huge plus

  • Familiarity with FHIR is also a great plus

  • A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in either information science/visualization, or a related field, Graphic Design, Illustration, Medical Informatics, Medical illustration, journalism from an accredited four-year institution

Responsibilities:

  • Use your storytelling and data visualization skills to enhance the value of our data, and the products we design to empower people to touch and interact with that data to improve healthcare.

  • Help set the standard for storytelling with interactive data visualization tools, practices and communications methods that empower people.

  • Create accurate data based visualizations that are accessible, engaging, relevant, contextual and actionable to the respective user audience.

  • Work to explore, understand, and determine the most effective data sources to enable and empower our users to achieve their goals and the align with the higher-level business requirements.

  • Learn and continue to learn how to adapt your visualization skills into interactive visualizations.

  • Partner cross-functionally and collaboration with a truly cross disciplinary team of creatives, scientists (including clinical SMEs), developers, business leaders, and communications professionals.

  • You must be able to “read the room” and clearly communicate to a variety of different audiences with various different backgrounds and priorities.

  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior colleagues.

For Colorado residents only:

Annual Salary Range*: $108,000 -$135,000

Actual compensation may vary from posting based on geographic location, work experience, education and/or skill level.
