Research Computing advances scientific discovery by providing computational tools and expertise to accelerate and demonstrate research outcomes. We support computationally enabled science by providing computational building blocks (e.g., HPC, Machine Learning environments, Data Management Tools etc.). In addition, we provide services, expertise, and support to researchers to optimize their use of our capabilities (e.g., User Experience, Software Engineering, HPC Consulting, Cloud Deployment, etc.). We are seeking a proven and experienced software engineer and architect. This person will provide software leadership working alongside other senior engineers, and research scientists to establish and implement remarkable solutions for our peers across the Lab. This challenging role will include working with various research organizations across the Lab, the ability to grasp the pertinent technical and scientific concepts and develop unique software solutions for novel research challenges. Likely domains include software development lifecycle tooling and administration, cloud native and HPC software application development, and scientific data workflows and engineering. In addition, you will have the opportunity to help build up teams of early career software engineers, modeling behaviors to institutionalize solid software practices and creative solutions.

Designs, develops, documents, tests, and debugs new and existing software systems, hardware/software interfaces, and/or applications according to industry established software engineering principals and best practices. Works collaboratively within a team to execute on the full system development lifecycle including analyzing user needs to determine technical requirements; developing technical specifications based on conceptual design and requirements; developing well-crafted and documented source code; integrating hardware using software; automating manual tasks; and consulting with the end user to prototype, configure, refine, test, and debug programs or systems to meet needs. Identifies and evaluates new technologies or methods for implementation and continuous improvement.
BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
PhD with 3+ year of relevant experience
Demonstrated success in developing novel and challenging technical and scientific solutions
Experience (academic and commercial) in other science and engineering fields in addition to computer science
Experience with operating or administering development centric platforms (Atlassian, GitLab, GitHub)
Experience working within High Performance Computing, Cloud, and cloud native environments
Experience leading or building technical teams and meeting organizational goals and objectives
