TOWN OF HYSHAM Street Maintenance Worker in HYSHAM, Montana

GENERAL PURPOSE: Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of the street and alley systems. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Mayor and/or designee. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None generally. May serve as a lead worker over lower level maintenance workers. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES a) Assists with the planning, scheduling and implementation of construction, maintenance, and operation and construction activities designed to provide quality street and alley service. b) Assists in the training of lower level employees performing the duties of maintenance, construction and repair of street and alleys. c) Inspects and/or repairs streets and alleys at frequent intervals to insure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly. d) Maintains and updates a variety of maps and records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, repairs, etc. e) Determines the locations of gas, telephone. power, television, water and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation. f) Responds to complaints and service requests regarding pot holes, right-of-way problems, signals, street lights or related issues; evaluates situation; and comes up with a manner of correcting the problem. g) Mows and maintains pubIic rights-of way. h) Contacts residents and business owners in area where services or access may be discontinued and explains when access or services will be restored. i) Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use. j) Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel and sand. k) Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment 1) Deals with the public in a manner that effectively promotes the image of the Town of Hysham and handles complaints tactfully but thoroughly. m) Cleans equipment, as well as sweeping and cleaning the shops on a regular basis. n) Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment. o) Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards. p) Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling. q) Assists in the training of lower level employees to increase their skills in the maintenance, construction and repair of streets and alleys. r) Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the street department. s) Performs other duties and assignments as may be required. PERIPHERAL DUTIES: a) Serves on various employee or other committees as assigned. b) Assists water or sewer crews as needed. c) May be required to spray for mosquitoes, assist Wastewater Treatment Facility System Operator, and/or assist Water Treatment Plant and Water Distribution System Operator (ce1tifications needed). DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: A. Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent, and B. Four (4) years of experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair, or C. Any equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary knowledge, Skills and Abilities: A. Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities; B. Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment; and C. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. SPE IAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) certification (at own expense) as well as abiding by all drug and alcohol testing requirements for CDL holders that may be imposed by the Town and applicable State and Federal laws. May require certification for spraying mosquitoes, certification as a Wastewater Treatment Facility System, and/or certification as Water Treatment Plant and Water Distribution System Operator, as required by local, state, and federal laws. The Town will pay for these certifications, but if employee chooses to terminate employment within one (1) ye1ar from the date corresponding to the employee's certification in each subject, the Town will seek reimbursement for the costs of such certification, mileage, and associated expenses paid, and may withhold such cost from the employee's final paycheck. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, street roller, powerlift, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, aeroi I propane kettle, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, and ditch witch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
