Logan Health Histology Technician in Kalispell, Montana

Job Description Summary:

Logan Health Medical Center is looking for a Histology Technician to join their team! The ideal candidate will have an Associate Degree in Science and have their HLT or ASCP certification.

This detail-oriented performs the preparation of surgical and medical tissue specimen slides and staining for Pathology Diagnosis. An understanding of anatomy and laboratory processes and procedures is beneficial for this position. Teamwork, good communication skills, as well as ability to use different computer applications is a must.

Qualifications:

  • Associates Degreee in Sciense is preferred.

  • Certification in Histology (ASCP) preferred. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, a self-starter, possess critical thinking skills and be able to set priorities and function as part of a team as well as independently.

  • Commitment to working in a team environment and maintaining confidentiality as needed.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.

  • Possess and maintain computer skills to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn other software as needed.

Job Specific Duties:

  • Receiving of Tissue Specimens and confirming specimen and patient identification

  • Handling of Biohazardous Materials

  • Accessioning of specimens for subsequent processing, using the Meditech LIS Pathology module

  • Using Tissue Processors to “Fix” grossed tissue to preserve cellular structures and integrity

  • Embedding the tissues in Paraffin to prepare them for Cutting

  • Use of a Microtome to Cut the embedded tissues (blocks) to obtain thin slices of the tissues to mount on slides so the cellular structures, proteins, DNA, and/or RNA can be stained

  • Use of different staining protocols including automated and manual staining methods

  • Maintenance of the equipment for the above listed processes

  • Quality control for the above listed processes

  • Troubleshooting and Critical thinking skills required.

  • Inventory, stocking, and handling of various reagents, including some hazardous chemicals, and laboratory supplies

  • Storage and retrieval of already processed tissues, blocks, slides, and reports.

  • Performs quality control (QC) and documentation per department protocol for assigned area(s). Monitors and evaluates QC for test results according to established protocols.

  • Performs accreditation-related tasks to include, competencies in the CAP Competency Program and proficiency testing.

  • Maintains competency in computer skills and updates and modifies application additions to appropriate systems. Accurately orders/cancels tests, verifies results and documents in Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

  • Contributes to the writing and revisions of polices and procedures as applicable to assigned area(s).

  • Accurately processes, cuts, and stains blocks of tissue specimens per department protocol for assigned area(s).

  • Reviews and evaluates test results and follows up on abnormal or problematic results per department protocol.

  • Prepares reagents, stains, and solutions for total processing of specimens.

Schedule:

Logan Health operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed.
