JOURNEYMAN TREE TRIMMER

Full-Time Union Position - Starting Wage:  $36.99 per hour 

Probationary Period: Employment is subject to a 1-year probationary period upon hiring

Licenses/Certifications: Must have a Montana Class A CDL.

Location:  Kalispell, MT 

Union: Required to be/become a member of the IBEW Local 768

POSITION SUMMARY

Provide efficient and safe tree trimming and brush clearing work around and near F.E.C. rights-of-way for distribution and transmission of electrical service.  This involves working around and near both energized and de-energized power lines and electrical equipment at all voltage levels.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

When appropriate, practices barricading on public highways and public rights-of-way to include the proper use of warning signs, devices and flagging procedures.

Following all specific instructions detailed on each service order or assignment, cuts, prunes, shapes and trims trees.  Follows all training and safety instructions for the proper use of all equipment.

Performs regular and timely maintenance on all equipment and vehicles to ensure their ongoing, smooth and efficient working condition.  Assists Tree Trimmer Foreman in maintaining current inventory of equipment.

Gathers brush, limbs, etc. from trees trimmed and feeds safely into the chipping equipment.  Performs routine maintenance on chipping equipment.

When approached by a property owner, or the general public, communicates in a professional and helpful manner answering any questions or concerns.  If concerns still exist, seeks assistance from the Foreman.

Maintains ongoing, effective communication with direct supervisor regarding the specifics of each assignment, problems that may occur and questions that may arise.

Uses safe and efficient practices when performing any and all aspects of the job, to include, but not limited to the following:
Practices environmental compliance and safety rule compliance in all cutting, pruning, line clearance, and chipping construction and maintenance.

Practices good urban and rural forestry and tree care to ensure good public relations with members. 

Follows all live line clearance regulations, one-shot holds, minimum approach distances, and line clearance procedures.

The Journeyman Tree Trimmer will assist the Foreman with the on-the-job training of an Apprentice to include, but no limited to:

-Safety Manual; First Aid and CPR; bucket truck rescue.

-Safety equipment and practices; tree climbing, sawing and pruning.

-Chainsaw and brush chipper operation, maintenance and sharpening.

-Care and use of all personal protective equipment.

-Use of ropes, blocks and proper rigging practices.

-All aspects of urban and rural forestry and tree care.

-Member notification.

When traveling throughout FEC territory, be aware of the condition of the electric system.  When a problem or hazard is identified, accurately complete a service order and/or communicate with the appropriate FEC department.

Always assist members/vendors/employees and the general public in a courteous and professional manner ensuring their continued satisfaction with FEC.  Work in harmony and show respect to all fellow employees in order to promote an effective and pleasant working environment.
          
In pursuit of zero workplace incidents, promotes and maintains a positive safety culture while adhering to all applicable policies outlined in the Safety Manual.  Reports all incidents and potential safety hazards in a timely manner to supervisor or Safety Resource Officer.

Become familiar with and keep current with F.E.C. objectives and applicable policies. 

Performs other duties as assigned by management applying the same skill and enthusiasm as with regularly assigned responsibilities.

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  High School diploma or equivalent.      
Job Related Experience:  Must be a Journeyman Tree Trimmer.             

Supervision:  No supervisory experience required. 

Computer Skills:  Experience with personal computers and hand held devices preferred.

Certificates & Licenses:  Must have a Montana Class A Commercial Driver’s License at date of employment and be insurable.

Other Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years old.
Able to work 40 hours a week, with additional time as required.

Must present a professional appearance at all times.

 Must be able to obtain a First Aid and CPR certificate (training provided by F.E.C.) and become proficient at tree top rescue.

Able to carry and use a 25 lb. chain/circle saw for extended time and maneuver tree limbs weighing up to 100 lbs.

Must have the ability to stand in a tree while working, often in awkward positions.
Feed tree branches, etc., into a chipping machine.

Accept duty calls, as needed, day or night, seven days per week.

Effective verbal communications skills; legible handwriting; good customer service skills.

Occasional out-of-area travel which can include several days of overnight stay.
 
Work schedule as defined by the Union contract, with overtime as required.
 
This position is required to join the Union and is covered under the Basic Agreement between F.E.C. and the IBEW Local 768.
