Job Overview: */ /The purpose is to provide a wide range of recreation programs and interventions in an adult mental health nursing care facility. The Recreation Aide follows individual care plans to contribute to the resident’s involvement as well as provides opportunities to meet physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of the residents under the direction of a recreational supervisor and in accordance with State and Federal regulations. *Major Duties or Responsibilities: A. Recreation Activity Planning and Facilitation 80% · Plans, organizes, and facilitates activities as directed by the Recreation Supervisor to promote the physical, social, spiritual, and emotional well-being of the residents. · Adapts group and individual activities by segmenting tasks in order for residents to achieve success at varying levels of functioning.// · Uses adaptive equipment such as hearing amplifiers, adjustable tables, book stands, magnifying glasses, and talking books.// · Provides one-to-one, sensory stimulation such as reading, visiting, reminiscing, music, and gentle touch activities for residents who are unable or choose not to attend group activities. · Uses behavioral management techniques according to individual needs in order to maintain dignity by using resident’s name, validation of feelings, using redirection techniques, offering alternatives, and choices in activities.// · Provides community opportunities for residents such as community events, bus rides, out to lunch, bowling, fishing trips, and nature outings.// · Communicates with other departments informing which residents are participating in outings, date, time, costs, and making sure safety precautions are taken into consideration.// · Plans and organizes special events to meet the special interests and needs of the residents. Communicates and coordinates with other departments the day and time of events, special housekeeping, and dietary needs. Promotes through verbal and visual posters, decorates the area, escorts residents, and motivates the participants to be actively involved.// · Facilitates funerals and memorials of deceased residents to show respect and have closure for family, peers, and staff. Works with volunteers and clergy, sets up activity room, makes family feel welcome, and encourages and assists with participation of the residents.// · Serves canteen cart daily while referring to a list of residents with special diets to provide residents with a choice of an afternoon canteen item and an opportunity to socially interact with peers. Keeps a variety of snack items stocked and informs the purchasing agent when stock is low.// · Facilitates resident phone calls one evening weekly, in coordination with Social Services and following the schedule set by the Recreation Supervisor, to provide the opportunity for the residents to maintain connection with their families or friends. Maintains records of who makes phone calls in a Social Services logbook. Assists residents with dialing and placing the call. Maintains order of residents who are waiting to make a call and report problems and concerns.// · Assists residents with ambulating, transfers, and basic care needs during facility activities and community outings.// · Demonstrates a respectful approach to residents and is aware of resident rights to provide dignity and respect.// · Updates daily activity boards on assigned wings to inform residents, staff, and visitors of activities on a daily basis. Looking at the recreation schedule and getting updated special events determined at recreation staff meetings or from Recreation Supervisor when staffing changes occur. · Decorates assigned wing’s bulletin boards and shared living space, hallways, etc. that reflect the season or special event to provide a homelike atmosphere. Uses supplies in monthly date boxes, Christmas decorations in storage, and supplies found in storerooms as well as requesting decorations to be purchased from the Recreation Supervisor. · Provides age-appropriate materials such as cards, puzzles, computer games, and picture books for activities that are suitable to the resident’s cognitive functioning level for the resident’s leisure enjoyment and for staff to offer diversional activities.// · Accepts requests from residents and other staff and submits the information to the Recreation Supervisor. · Attends scheduled staff meeting and contributes to exchange of ideas, offers input into program needs, addresses individual resident concerns, and makes program recommendations to improve departmental communication and contribute to quality programming. · Works with volunteer groups and individuals to expand the recreational offering for the residents’ enjoyment. B. Documentation 15% · Keeps accurate records following recreation procedures and the direction of the Recreation Supervisor. · Daily completes participation records of each resident. Records the attendance and pertinent information such as type of group, length of time, and resident response to the activity so those residents who are not participating can be identified by the Recreation Supervisor and care plan goals can accurately reflect the resident’s needs.// · Completed records are turned in to the Recreation Supervisor on a monthly basis or as requested.// · Writes quarterly observation note on assigned residents and indicates the level of participation, changes in behavior, affect and responses to interventions, or significant events so the Recreation Supervisor has current information to use in the resident’s care plan.// C. Other Duties 5% · Maintains supply areas by keeping them clean and organized and makes recommendations for supplies and equipment to supervisor. · Obtains shopping requests from residents and writes them on the shopping request list for approval. Shopping is done for residents on a weekly basis for personal items not available in the facility, which contributes to their psycho-social well-being. Items are distributed to the residents, signatures are obtained from residents for items received, and account slips are turned in to the Recreation Supervisor. · Responds to emergencies such as fire, disaster, missing persons, resident injury, or safety hazards promptly according to established policy. · Reports any accidents or injuries to resident to supervisor immediately. · Reports resident behavior problems to Supervisor and Nurse. * Physical and Environmental Demands:There exists the possibility of injury to self or others due to unpredictable behavior of residents. Frequently a recreation staff facilitates groups that have over 25 residents at a time. Exposed to unpleasant odors and body fluids on a daily basis. Work ranges from light to medium. Physical demands are lifting equipment, moving residents, moving supplies and furniture, pushing carts, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and reaching in varying degrees to facilitate recreation activities and other duties of the job. Climbing ladder for decorating. Programs take place in the facility, out of doors, and in the community. Gardening, fishing, and other outdoor activities as needed. · Lift frequently: 20 lbs. · Lift supplies/groceries and equipment · Lift occasionally: 50 lbs. · Supplies from storage/transfer residents to chairs/set up tables for special events. · Push: frequently weighing up to 200 lbs. or more. · Push residents in wheelchairs or Geri chairs to activities, push activity and coffee carts and snack carts. *Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Behaviors): Required for thefirst day of work: · Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with others, both orally and in writing · Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees. · Ability to follow oral and written instruction explicitly. · Motor coordination is necessary to facilitate many of the groups. · Must be able to facilitate large and small groups activities. Provide leadership, direction, and display creativity and enthusiasm. · Ability to document, record, and report resident participation, behaviors, and general observations. · Organizational skills in planning and being prepared for activities and special events. · Must be willing to work with holiday themes. · Ability to assist residents in ambulating, transferring, and basic care needs during activities as needed. · Visual and hearing acuity is required to facilitate recreation activities.
