One Health Sanitarian in Lewistown, Montana

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides environmental health services including the licensing and inspection program for public establishments and the approval of septic permits when subsurface wastewater treatment systems are completed. Needs a working knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of environmental sanitation, federal, state, and local laws and regulations, community resources, and agency policies and procedures. The individual has the ability to thoroughly investigate sanitation problems, to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public and to accept and utilities supervision.

COMPENSATION: $24.45-28.88 hr/ DOE

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full Time, 40 hours per week

AVAILABILITY: Monday to Friday

Education/Certificates/Licenses:

Required, Per Montana Administrative Rules of Montana 24.216.502

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health or its equivalent from accredited university or college.

  • Certification from the State of Montana as a Registered Sanitarian

  • Valid driver’s license

    Experience

    Required:
  • A combination of experience and/or education to provide a working knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of environmental sanitation, federal, state, and local laws and regulations, community resources, and agency policies and procedures and the ability to thoroughly investigate sanitation problems.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts routine and required inspection of each licensed establishment within the assigned jurisdiction as required by Montana Code Annotated, Administrative Rules of Montana or State Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS).

  • Gives advice on or enforcing compliance with state and local regulations.

  • Assists with and provide input in the review of proposed plans for all new or remodeled establishments licensed by the State Department of Public Health and Human Services.

  • Provides Food Safety instruction and coordinates with SERV Safe partners to provide food safety training.

  • Issues septic system permits, inspects installed septic systems, and enforces jurisdictions’ Regulations for Subsurface Wastewater Treatment Systems.

  • Assists with enforcement matters related to environmental health laws and regulations.

  • Attends and participates in meetings, educational programs and in-services as requested/required.

  • Participates in disaster and emergency activities and assists with emergency preparedness contract deliverables as requested.

  • Provides sanitarian activity report as requested/required.

  • Answers complex inquiries and complaints within area of expertise from the public, community groups, private and public agencies, and others to promote program objectives and provide transparency in operations.

  • Works with Commissioners, Disaster Emergency Coordinator (DES) Coordinators, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Directors, law enforcement and other partners to oversee response during disaster or emergency situations and ensures that applicable health and safety procedures are followed.

  • Provides state-required supervision to Sanitarian-In-Training, if required.
