Cabinet Peaks Medical Center Chemotherapy/Infusion RN, Part Time in Libby, Montana

Cabinet Peaks Medical Center is seeking a Chemotherapy/Infusion RN to join the Team!

The Chemo RN administers simple to complex infusion therapy for chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy treatments to patients while working in collaboration with physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals. The RN demonstrates a professional model of nursing practice through the use of oncology related clinical pathways. This position is responsible for assessing, prioritizing and monitoring the patient under their care with strong critical thinking skills. The Chemo RN provides education to patients, family members and significant others regarding cancer therapy and treatments associated with specific medication and treatment alternatives. The RN remains current with changing treatment and evidenced based care required to effectively care for adult and geriatric populations and is aware of the age specific consideration in delivering care to this population group.

This position provides day to day operational guidance as well as chemotherapy and infusion related education to other staff members as well as provides staff education when needed.

Major Job Duties & Responsibilities

Demonstrates knowledge of ambulatory infusion pump use and maintenance, cleaning pumps after each use. Facilitates medication dose modification by assessing patient, assessing labs, consulting protocol and/or treatment plan, calculating dose and consulting physician regarding dose modifications, problems and symptom management.

Performs venipuncture, accesses portacaths and maintains central line venous catheters. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the assessment, management, and follow-up care of extravasation.

Administers all medication/blood products using correct product, dosage, route, time and technique. Follows infusion policy and guidelines. Displays appropriate technical skills for the administration of chemotherapy, medications and blood products, to include, but not limited to: venipuncture, central line access and infusion devices.

Documents nursing assessments, patient teaching, and fluid/medication administration in the patient chart. Communicates all pertinent information and any interventions to physician. Assures nursing charges are accurate and complete after each visit.

Assesses patient/family needs and provides teaching and other instructional material. Demonstrates awareness of community and regional resources available to patients and assists with referrals if necessary.

Maintains a clean work environment and restocks the supply area as needed.

Follows OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents, biohazardous waste and any other material potentially infected with a blood borne pathogen.

Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations. Maintains patient confidentiality.

Administers chemotherapy, hydration and other medications as ordered by physician. Maintains appropriate and efficient patient flow.

Maintains knowledge of reimbursement procedures or knows who to ask if any questions. Completes charges at the end of each patient visit. Assures pre-authorization and pertinent consents are obtained prior to administering any therapy.

Coordinates time of administration with pharmacy for ordering and scheduling with others as needed.

Attendance within policy guidelines. Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time frame.

Handles conflicts and concerns. Seeks resolutions in a timely and professional manner.

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

Demonstrates knowledge of ambulatory infusion pump use and maintenance, cleaning pumps after each use.

Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the assessment, management, and follow-up care of extravasation.

Displays appropriate technical skills for the administration of chemotherapy, medications and blood products, to include, but not limited to: venipuncture, central line access and infusion devices.

Demonstrate skill and experience in effectively collaborating with care team members, using a high level of expertise in written, oral and interpersonal communication.

Must demonstrate an exceptional level of easily understood verbal communication on the phone, in person and in writing.

Intermediate computer and keyboarding skills in a Windows based environment.

Knowledge of OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents, biohazardous waste and any other material potentially infected with a blood borne pathogen.

Excellent nursing knowledge of disease processes and the specific treatment combinations.Ability to recognize and intervene in urgent/emergent situations.

Committed to continuing education to enhance and support the changing environment of cancer treatment.Excellent intravenous therapy skills including access, maintenance and troubleshooting of peripheral intravenous catheters and vascular access devices.

Ability to understand and explain treatment associated with biologics, IV hydration and antibiotic medications.

Knowledge of Infection Control guidelines and practices.Excellent prioritization, organization and management skills.

Schedule

Schedule will be based on the needs of the department.

Educational Requirements

Graduate from an accredited program for professional nursing education, BSN preferred.

Current Montana Registered Nurse License.

Current BLS, ACLS.

Current or pending Certified Registered Nurse Infusion (CRNI) preferred.

Current or pending Oncology Certified Registered Nurse (OCN) preferred.

Must maintain continuing education requirements.

Experience

Minimum of three (3) years as a Registered Nurse, clinical oncology experience preferred.

Successful completion of the Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course every two years.
