Responsibilities and Qualifications

Job Title: Injection Molding Plastics Process Specialist

Position Summary:

Including but not limited to document processes for optimal processing turnarounds, trouble shoot and problem solve production downtime causes. Train mold technicians, reduce down time, utilize lean principles, provide assistance to operations including troubleshooting of operating problems, special tests and assistance in identifying limiting factors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and assist with specification of injection molding tooling and associated equipment/machinery.

  • Document experimental results for internal technical reports and new product feedback.

  • Create Work Instructions for Molding best practices.

  • Lead and coach production personnel on process, equipment, and analytical approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.

  • Engineer and control molding processes

  • Oversee and execute training program for technicians

  • Responsible for developing and organizing in-depth technical training materials for the molding process

  • Collaborates with the training manager, master molders, and plant or production managers to obtain information required to develop training materials on all aspects of the process

  • Develops training content - handouts, outlines, agendas and tools to demonstrate proficiency

  • Builds training and train-the-trainer programs Provide training and consulting to Mold Technicians

  • Trains on all shifts and in all plants as required

  • Ensures new training methodologies are incorporated into training approach through ongoing education and training

  • Work with Mold Process Technicians in the subject areas to train them in procedures and policies.

  • Use Work Instructions and other training materials to instruct students, and show students how to find relevant work instructions for their areas.

  • Adhere to all quality and safety standards within the department.

  • Maintain clean and organized work area with emphasis on safety, quality, efficiency, and utilization.

  • Continually seek to improve work processes and individual performance.

  • Adhere to all company policies and operational procedures.

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

  • Support technicians with mentoring, coaching and hands on assistance

  • Support R&D department with part design, tool design, prototyping, mold sampling/approval

  • Support Manufacturing Engineering department with process and system improvements

  • Support the production floor as needed

  • Work with product developers to optimize materials for processing

  • Translate new processing and testing technologies to internal customers and operations.

  • Set-up machinery to conduct processing studies with resins and new molds.

  • Optimize processing conditions using data acquisition software and end-product performance testing.

  • Review and assist with specification of injection molding tooling and associated equipment/machinery.

  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to define project deliverables and test protocols for development programs.

  • Document experimental results for internal technical reports and new product feedback.

  • Develop innovative solutions to address customer/industry application development needs. Identify and capture intellectual property associated with solutions.

  • Lead in the design and implementation of equipment and process improvements.

  • Create Work Instructions for Molding best practices.

  • Assist with the installation and start-up of new equipment and process improvement.

  • Lead and coach production personnel on process, equipment, and analytical approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.

  • Support the ISO initiative to ensure compliance with all qualified directives

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 10+ years in Plastic Injection Molding processing experience (education included)

  • Scientific approach to processing, systems and problem solving

  • Skilled coalition builder

  • Hands on problem solving skills

  • Experience working interdepartmentally

  • Highly self-motivated with drive for results

  • Ability to balance multiple projects concurrently

  • Ability to effectively teach and mentor

Job Requirements:

  • Research and develop new manufacturing processes.

  • Analyze manufacturing data and suggest improvements.

  • Ensure quality output of molded components.

  • Develop and design engineered plastic parts, insert molded parts and assemblies.

  • Interact with customers, suppliers, and internal resources.

  • Establish the parameters for an optimal molding environment.

  • Analyze quality control and correct flaws.

  • Work with other team members and vendors.

  • Review existing validation criteria and update as needed.

  • Implement process improvements through lean and continuous improvement methods

  • Implement quality improvements, reduce manufacturing costs, improve tooling and equipment

  • Look for ways to reduce downtime, troubleshoot and problem solve equipment issues

  • Troubleshoot materials and processing issues

  • Look for ways to reduce scrap rates - recommend improvements and countermeasures

  • Provide both direct and indirect support to the production floor

  • Train incumbent Mold Technicians across shifts

  • Identify opportunities for improvement, document, and implement process to achieve maximum results.
