By thenatureandcomplexity ofWarden Captains' duties,typically theWardenCaptain isavailable 24hoursa day/I/7days a week to support field staff,respond tothe public andaddress wildlife issues.Job demands are heaviest during weekends &holidays. WardenCaptains may workoddhours,generally alonewithnobackup. Officer must regularly respond to verbal communication, telephones, electronic and radio communications. Officers must be inexcellent physical health and condition. This position requires frequent climbing, bending, pushing, pulling, dragging. Requireslifting 50lbs unassisted. Working withsick orinjured wildlife, removing illegal kills, trapping and relocating animals, back packing, horseback patrols, loading and unloading, operating boats,snowmobiles, and OHV's, physical laborindeepsnow, anduseofforceincidentsrequirephysical strength, stamina and/or force. Officersmust beinexcellent mental condition asawardensergeant mustdealwithall types of personalities and stress levels. The Warden Captain is required to function inall weather extremes, under adverse working conditions for prolonged patrols and activities.Patrolling often requires sitting for long periods of time in a vehicle. Handling various wildlifeandequipment, traversing roughterrain,including water,operatingvehicles/vesselsathighspeeds andunder unstable conditions may result ininjury.Dangerous interactions withcriminals, executing arrests and being subject to assault andto dangerous substances including drugs and bodily fluids is to beexpected. JobDuties: The Warden Captain is responsible for the administrationand implementation of the law enforcement program and/or the supervision of thelawenforcement personnel and lawenforcement operations intheir assigned geographic areaof responsibility.WardenCaptains areknowledgeable incriminal law,criminal procedure, search &seizure, detention & arrest, the judicial process and general personnel matters including the elements of progressive discipline. They facilitate and coordinate criminal investigationswithin the region accordingly. -TheWarden Captainisresponsible forcarryingouttheDepartment's planforFWP'slawenforcement activities within the region. -TheWardenCaptain plans,assignsandreviews operational objectives tobemetinatimely andcost-efficient manner and develops mechanisms for identifying andsolving problems as needs arise. -The WardenCaptain monitorsbudgetandpersonal servicesexpenditures. -TheWardenCaptain isresponsible fordirectingactivitiesthroughthe WardenSergeantsandmonitoring the regional enforcement division utilization of PR funding. -TheWardenCaptaincompletes midyearcheck-ins andannual performance reviews andany performance plansor disciplinaryaction for the wardens in his or her report. -Theincumbentavails him/herselftosubordinatesfortechnicaldirectionininterpretationoflaworpolicy. -Participatesin,coordinatesandalsoprovidestrainingincareerdevelopment. -Managesandsupervises theregional enforcement ofstateandfederal fishandwildlifeconservationlaws, regulations as well as parks and recreation laws and regulations. -Assumessimilardutiesasfieldwardenasneededor duringpeakseasons. -Maintains closeliaison with lawenforcement agencies atthelocal, county,state,federalandTribal levels concerning issues of mutual concern that relate to fish, wildlife, parks and recreation management. -Managesschedulingandoccasionallypatrolsvacantwardendistrictasneeded. - Perform a widearray ofother duties asassigned by theChief orAssistant Chiefand/orotherduties or responsibilitiesacquired through taking on additional assignments. Knowledge,SkillsandAbilities: Proficient knowledge of major fish and wildlife species and their habitats Proficient knowledge ofthewidevariety ofoutdoorrecreationinMontana. Extensive knowledge of theories,principles, andpractices of lawenforcement anditsfunctionscommonly obtained through peace officer certification. Extensiveknowledgeinthe useofforcecontinuumand officersurvival. Excellent oral & written communication skills are required so asto interact with themedia in addition to an extensive understanding ofsociology, psychology, conflict management & resolution, and criminal behavior patternsinorderto communicate withandunderstandthegeneral publicandthose whorecreate outdoors andin department owned recreational areas. Proficient in theuseof a variety offirearms and standard law enforcement equipment including all types of motorized vehicles&equipment, complexmonitoring devices,simulated wildlife,computers,electronics, traps, immobilizing agents & a working knowledge of equipment used by other department divisions. Highproficiency intheuseofMobileComputer Terminalsandtheirfunctions, programs andsystemsas well as proficiency in the use of various computers, programs, and electronic systems. Thorough knowledge ofdepartmentorganization, policy,operationand budget,fish,wildlife,parksandrecreation laws, rules and regulations. Possessprofessional &technical knowledge ineachofthedepartment's responsibilities;enforcement, fish,wildlife &parks management, conservation education, andfield servicestoensure constituents and the department's needs are addressed. Workingknowledgeofstandardadministrativeproceduresandpractices,statebudgetingrulesandprocedures. Knowledge ofpersonnel management concepts and practices andpossesstheability toanalyzedataandmake professional judgments in thecourse ofsupervising and working with other people. Skilledin proceduresformitigating wildlife damage/depredation,infectious wildlifediseases,trapping& transplanting, immobilization & relocation of wildlife. MinimumQualifications(EducationandExperience): Theknowledge, skills, andabilities of thispositionareattained throughcombination ofeducation equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Fish and Wildlife Biology or Management, Park Management, Outdoor Recreation, Criminal Justice or aclosely related field and 5 or more years of job-related work experience.
