Montana Employer General Ranch Hand in MILES CITY, Montana

Temporary full-time position from 2/15/2020 to 12/14/2020The General Farm Ranch Hand position will be required to perform a variety of duties related to the production of cattle and hay. Duties will include the following: check physical characteristics, observe general condition of livestock and apply the appropriate care, examine animals to detect illness/injury/disease, rate of weight gain to determine delivery time, assist in delivery and night calving, apply or administer medications/vaccines, mix feed/additives and feed/water livestock; build water barriers around water tanks; place mineral blocks, drive equipment, herd livestock to various pastures, sort cattle on foot in grow yard; ride horse and/or 4-wheeler to move cows; assist with branding; confine livestock in stalls, clean/disinfect livestock corrals/stalls/sheds, dock, castrate, brand, clip/tag and clamp livestock. Worker will be required to operate modern farm equipment (some with GPS) for planting and harvesting hay including swather and round baler; operate skid steer with attachments; perform general maintenance on equipment; irrigate fields with pivots, wheel lines and flood irrigation, install and remove irrigation pipe, manually moving pipe, maintaining irrigation equipment and overseeing operation of irrigation pumps; hoist/stack bales of hay onto wagon/truck, repair, replace and build and repair fence (expect a lot of fencing due to wild fires), pick rocks, perform general cleanup of farm acreage, and drive, load/unload semi-trucks (on the ranch only). Worker must be willing to perform tasks capably and efficiently without close supervision. The job entails working with farm animals and machinery, outdoors in all types of weather (extreme heat, wind and cold) and occasional exposure to herding hazards such as cattle stampedes, kicking/bucking horses, poisonous snakes and predators. Worker must crouch, bend, lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds. Communication is mostly with 2-way radios and land line. Long/odd hours may be required with night shifts during calving and split shifts when irrigating. A minimum of 3 months experience is required. Driving is required.Worker is required to obtain a Montana Drivers' License.Equipment maintenance/fencing: (Feb. 15-Mar. 15) Mon-Sat. 8am to 5pmCalving season: (Mar. 15 - May 15) Mon-Sat. 7pm to 5am (night shifts)Irrigation/haying season/fencing/cattle work (May 15 - Nov. 15): normal hrs. Mon - Sat. 7am to 6pm; irrigating .and. haying is Mon-Sat. 5am to 10 am and 7pm to midnight (split shifts)Equipment maintenance: (Nov. 15 - Dec. 14) Mon - Sat. 8am to 5pmCell phones do not have good signal in most areas.
