Responsibilities The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to, the following: Coordinating and providing support to State and Field Offices for voice and data equipment installation and maintenance. Working closely with other telecommunications personnel in the design, installation, and repair of radio equipment. Interfacing dispatch consoles, base, repeater, and mobile radios and tone remotes. Developing and conducting in-house training sessions for users in the proper use and capability of the equipment. Reviewing radio frequency authorizations in accordance with Department and Bureau requirements, prepares requests for new authorizations as needed, and coordinates updates with assigned offices. Scaling radio tower heights up to 100 feet in the air to provide installation and maintenance of antennas and Coax/Heliax/Waveguide runs to radio system equipment. Successfully completing approved climbing performance course and obtaining/maintaining climbing certification. For GS-9: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes providing administration, delivery, and support of information technology (IT) networks and radio communications; troubleshooting occurrences that disrupt the flow of communications (requiring complete software reloads and system back-ups); and operating satellite and fiber optic computer stations OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or in a field with a major study in electrical or electronic engineering, mathematics, physics, public utilities, statistics, computer science, telecommunications management, information systems management, business administration, industrial management, or other fields related to the position to be filled. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. For GS-11: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience for the GS-11 level include the use of schematic diagrams, a variety of test equipment, and the application of appropriate electronic formulas involved in testing, troubleshooting, modifying, designing, calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, constructing, developing on electronic equipment or similar functions. OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M., if related. Education must be in the major study of electrical or electronic engineering, mathematics, physics, public utilities, statistics, computer science, telecommunications management, information systems management, business administration, industrial management, or other fields directly related to the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualification requirements for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate related graduate education Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level of the position to be filled. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking over rough or uneven surfaces, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. The work is performed around moving parts, carts, or machines; at construction or other work sites where equipment is being installed and/or removed requiring the wearing of hardhats, safety shoes, or similar situations involving moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions such as wearing protective clothing or gear such as masks, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields. Work Environment: Work performed under variable and unpredictable working conditions in many locations, sometimes in inclement weather and at high altitudes. Exposure to radio frequency hazards, high voltages, noise, and slippery and uneven surfaces. Also includes working in voice and data equipment rooms and computer rooms. Travel to field/remote communications sites in the desert, mountains, mud, and snow using 4x4 vehicles, snowmobiles, 4-wheel all-terrain vehicles or aircraft is required.
