State of Montana Aerial Observer - 90608/9/10 (Seasonal - Missoula) in Missoula, Montana

These seasonal positions will be open until filled with review of applications starting February 1st, 2021, with applications reviewed every two weeks until May 31st, 2021. Early application is strongly encouraged.

*FORESTRY DIVISION: *The Forestry Division, headquartered in Missoula, is responsible for planning and implementing forestry and fire management programs through an extensive network of staff located in field offices across the state. The Forestry Division has four major functions: fire & aviation management, forestry assistance, business management, and policy, planning & outreach. Following is a brief description of the programs, products and services offered through the Forestry Division's diverse programs.

DUTIES: The Aerial Observer flies in a small fixed wing aircraft to detect and provide legal locations of wildland fires by observation. The prevailing weather and wind conditions often result in extremely hot, bumpy, and or an uncomfortable working environment. Assists ground resources with directions (through road systems) to fire, using GPS in addition to maps. Reports fire information such as fire size, rate of spread, fuel types, and topography to Dispatch and responding resources. Observer operates two-way radio in air to ground communications, reviews patrol flight patterns, and maintains records for fire reports.

*ELIGIBILITY TO WORK: *In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the person selected must produce within three days of hire documents that show authorization to work in the United States. Examples of such documentation include a birth certificate or Social Security card along with a driver’s license or other picture I.D., or a U.S. passport, or a "green card".

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS: The Department of Natural Resources may include the following factors in determining whether an applicant meets the qualifications for the position: application form, typing test results, education, structured interview, job-related reference checks, job-related work experience, job-related current and past performance and application supplements.

Applicants claiming employment preference are required to provide proper documentation, i.e. Vet Preference (DD214), Disabled Vet document from U.S. Veterans Administration certifying service connected disability or purple heart medal, disabled (SRS Certification), when submitting application.

The seasonal positions will remain open and additional screening will occur as needed until positions are filled. Applicants for these positions must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire and have a valid drivers’ license and less than 12 conviction points over the most recent 36 months. All persons performing firefighting duties are required to pass a physical fitness test within three weeks of employment.* DNRC HAS ADOPTED THE PACK TEST AS THE REQUIRED PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST. CONTACT THE INDIVIDUAL LAND OFFICE FOR INFORMATION REGARDING PACK TEST REQUIREMENTS. *

APPROXIMATE DATES AND HOURS OF EMPLOYMENT FOR TEMPORARY SEASONAL POSITIONS will depend on each position and will vary between June and September. Positions will be terminated at the end of the normal work season or as notified by the Department.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Requirements:

  • 18 years of age at time of hire

  • Valid Driver’s License with less than 12 conviction points in the past 36 months.

  • This position requires availability on a daily basis during daylight hours. Individual must possess wildland fire experience and knowledge of forest fire terminology. This is not an aviator position.
