Overview

Do you enjoy visiting Missoula's open space Conservation Lands and want to find a way to help take care of them? This position may be for you! The Conservation Lands Maintenance Technician performs maintenance of native landscapes, ecosystems, and recreational resources, and infrastructure on City of Missoula open space Conservation Lands.

Job Status: Regular, Full-Time; Union Affiliated position - Montana Federation of Public Employees (MFPE)

Essential Functions

  • Coordinate conservation lands maintenance crews in performing native habitat and recreational infrastructure maintenance duties; determine crew assignments; review work; provide training on job-specific duties and safety practices.

  • Perform various conservation lands facility construction and maintenance functions, including surveying sites for grade, digging and trenching, pouring concrete, constructing pedestrian and mountain bike trails, trailheads, parking lots, signage, etc.

  • Provide support in maintaining public parks, including landscaping, above ground irrigation, and snow & ice removal.

  • Maintain multiple native habitat-types, including restoration with native plants, herbicide applications, forest thinning, pruning, prescribed burning, wildlife habitat improvement, seeding, collection of plant materials, etc.

  • Provide support with developing work plans, assessing risks, and implementing various contracts.

  • Assist with generating and maintaining inventories and ordering materials; maintain maintenance records.

  • Operate a variety of tools, vehicles, and equipment needed for habitat restoration and trail work, including backhoes, mini-excavators, skid-steers, dump trucks, tractors, forklifts, flail mowers, ATVs, herbicide sprayers, chainsaws, GPS units, welders, etc.

  • Assist with responding to various inquires and providing information on conservation lands management activities.

  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of construction and maintenance projects, including basic carpentry, welding, plumbing, electrical, and vehicle maintenance.

  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the principles and practices of recreational and land management, including recreation trail construction in natural areas, ecology, basic wildland fire fighting procedures, etc.

  • Knowledge of and ability to promote department safety considerations, City safety policies, OSHA standards and guidelines, and the Americans for Disabilities Act.

  • Skill in utilizing various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365 and GIS systems, with the ability to learn job-specific applications and equipment.

  • Skill in safely operating various tools, equipment, and vehicles used in conservation lands maintenance.

  • Skill in managing multiple projects with shifting priorities and timeline demands.

  • Skill in organization, time management and prioritizing with the proven ability to have keen attention to detail and accuracy in performing work with adherence to strict deadlines.

  • Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.

  • Ability to coordinate maintenance crew schedules, trainings, and ensure safe effective work practices.

  • Ability to identify maintenance needs and trouble-shooting solutions.

  • Ability to learn Missoula’s conservation lands, and parks systems, Montana’s native plants, exotic plants, and animals.

  • Ability to maintain current knowledge, developments, and trends related to specific area of focus and/or assigned projects.

  • Ability to maintain and exhibit integrity and discretion in handling the confidential and sensitive information.

  • Ability to maintain and foster a culture of professionalism, adhere to departmental and City standards and specifications, and support a positive team environment.

  • Ability to resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.

  • Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula practices and procedures.

Working Conditions:

  • Position requires the ability to lift and maneuver 75 lbs. or less.

  • Position requires the ability to walk 3 to 5 miles per day on adverse terrain while carrying a 35 lbs. pack.

  • Work environment may involve occasional exposure to unavoidable seasonal weather, uneven and steep terrain, occupational hazards, biohazards, construction hazards, and physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

Qualifications and Additional Application Materials

  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to three (3) years of land management experience, or another relevant field.

  • Must have a valid Montana commercial driver’s license** with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

  • Must be able to obtain an herbicide applicator license within 90 days of hire.

  • Experience in recreation management, ecology, or biology, preferred.
