Position Overview

The Formulator provides the overall support and guidance in formulation development; working to meet the customer and company project objectives. Works cross functionally within the organization to facilitate the successful completion of new products developed and improvement of existing products.

Essential Functions


  • Provides technical direction and guidance on Formulation Development.

  • Formulates new products in order to meet the customer and company objectives.

  • Oversees the development of new solid dosage nutraceutical products (i.e. tablets, capsules, powder fill, Liquids, Granulations).

  • Performs benchtop and prototypes for new product formulations.

  • Oversees the transfer of new products from design to production and collaborates with manufacturing engineering, process engineering, quality and other disciplines to ensure consistency of quality output, within tolerances established by customer.

  • Recommend formulation and specification improvements for better run-ability in production and improving the quality of the finished good.

  • Review, write, edit, and proactively create/update raw material and finished good specifications.

  • Assist with deviations to raw materials and formulas.

  • Monitor paperwork for accuracy.

  • Keep up with the latest technology regarding formulation, equipment and industry knowledge.

  • Keep current with areas of processing technology.

  • Provide on-call assistance to plant operations when product run-ability problems occur.

  • Participates in the evaluation, implementation and training of all new process equipment.

  • Responsible for advancing company-wide understanding of current manufacturing equipment and processes, and how they are related to the physical properties of our products.

  • Participate in meetings.

  • Participates in establishing the performance and quality expectations of our customers’ products.

Internal Relationships:

  • Communicate regularly with Product Engineering, Laboratories, Q.A., Materials Department, Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing, and Purchasing.

  • Work closely with Product Engineering, Production, Purchasing, Sales, Research and Development, and Quality Assurance to obtain information pertaining to setting accurate and detailed specifications for raw materials and finished good formulations.



  • Minimum BS Chemistry or related degree.

  • Minimum of 5 years related experience formulating dietary supplements.

  • Strong solid dosage and Liquid, hands-on formulation and scale-up experience.

  • Experience of blending (dry and wet), capsule fill (tamping style), tablet compression (including precompression and layered), tablet coating, Liquid formulation, excipient profiles and usages, and granulation (dry/wet, fluid bed) processes.

  • Competent knowledge and practical experience with supplement and/or pharmaceutical and/or functional foods product development, processing equipment and techniques and regulatory requirements.

  • Excellent analytical, technical writing, communication and data management.


  • PC and software skills

  • Ability to independently apply scientific and/or technical knowledge in the performance of job duties.

  • Good mechanical aptitude.

  • Prior experience in managing product and systems improvements.

  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to provide constructive feedback and coaching.

  • Strong oral and written communications, inclusive of negotiation skills.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy in workflow and organizational and analytical skills.

  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines and requirements accordingly.

  • Ability to perform in a fast pace environment with minimal direct supervision.

Physical Requirements

Working Conditions in the Office Setting:

  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in an office setting and operate office equipment.

  • Business casual attire.

Working Conditions on the Production Floor:

  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced light manufacturing environment.

  • PPE requirements: safety glasses, respiratory protection, company supplied lab coats, and gloves.

  • GMP gowning requirements: Hair net, beard guard (if applicable), shoe covers, and sweatbands as required.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of up to 30 pounds.

  • Sitting for prolonged periods of time.
