Overview
Gain hands-on experience in GIS and civil engineering with the City of Missoula!
We are seeking aGIS Utility Internfor an8-week summer internshipwithin ourPublic Works & Mobility Department. This opportunity offers college students real-world experience in GIS data creation, utility mapping, construction observation, and field data collection. Interns will work alongside professionals, engage instormwater inspections, ride-alongs with paving and water main leak crews, and GIS web-map creation, all while contributing to meaningful public infrastructure projects.

Essential Functions
Complete a summer project, such as: analyzing and researching existing City utility records to create GIS databases to assist our GIS department in the creation of public and internal maps.Suggested maps include a sewer utility customer layer, a water meter location layer, hydrant leak noise analysis, stormwater infiltration rate layer, or an adjustment of utility network data to GPS point accuracy.
Observe the operations of various Public Works and Mobility Department sections, such as: Streets Operations, Surface Engineering, Development Engineering, Utility Engineering, Transportation Planning, Water, Stormwater and Wastewater Operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of and ability to promote department safety considerations, City safety policies, OSHA standards and guidelines.
Skill in organization, time management, and the ability to prioritize tasks with shifting priorities and timeline demands.
Skill in utilizing computers, various software and databases, including drafting programs and GIS mapping systems, with the ability to learn job-specific applications and equipment.
Skill in reporting and analyzing data.
Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
Ability to safely operate various tools, vehicles, and other job specific equipment.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written policies, procedures, and instructions. Proven ability to participate in a customer focused and team-oriented environment.
Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula policies, practices, and procedures, including the ability to understand and interpret state and local government regulatory processes..
Working Conditions:
- Work environment may include exposure to occupational hazards, chemicals, biohazards, construction hazards, and physical risks, including uneven terrain, and adverse weather which require following basic safety precautions.
Qualifications and Additional Application Materials
Must be working toward a BS or MS in Civil Engineering, GIS, or another relevant field and have completed sophomore year in this field of study.
Must have a valid Montana driver’s license with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Experience with ArcGIS, preferred.
