Overview

As a Lifeguard at Missoula Parks and Recreation, safety, lifesaving, and first-responder duties are essential, but you will also maintain order, clean pool decks, and so much more.

The key to success in this position is having an authentically friendly demeanor, an unshakably positive attitude and the sincere desire to help and protect others.

This position will remain open until filled. Applicant screening will begin onMonday, March 18, 2024.

Essential Functions

LIFEGUARD

  • Maintain and promote a positive and safe swimming environment, including communicating and enforcing facility rules to all patrons utilizing the pool, pool area, and play features to prevent accidents.

  • Observe behavior of pool patrons to maintain order and safety.

  • Perform rescues of swimmers in danger; supervise crowd control.

  • Administer first aid, CPR, and AED.

  • Provide leadership and positive communications with patrons.

  • Maintain and inspect all lifesaving equipment and facilities for cleanliness and safety.

  • Clean locker rooms, pool decks, bathrooms, and lobby areas.

  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

    LEAD LIFEGUARD

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to all lifeguard staff; facilitate various trainings and staff meetings.

  • Assist with scheduling, record keeping, and public relations.

  • Ensure lifeguard operations and facilities are safe, clean, and adhere to city policies.

  • Assist with water quality maintenance of waterparks.

  • Provide instruction on water safety to various individuals and classes.

  • Serve as shift lead in the absence of the Aquatics Facility Leader or management.

  • Assist with maintaining inventory of equipment, rosters, and supplies.

  • Clean locker rooms, pool decks, bathrooms, and lobby areas.

  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of waterpark and pool facility safety procedures, policies, and practices with the ability to instruct on water safety and enforce rules firmly with tact.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of facilitating swim lessons, including program planning and development, staff management, training, risk mitigation, etc.

  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, pool water chemistry and water quality procedures and regulations.

  • Knowledge of and ability to promote department safety considerations, City safety policies, OSHA standards and guidelines, and the Americans for Disabilities Act.

  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.

  • Skill in multitasking in a fast-paced environment, while providing effective customer service.

  • Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with diverse individuals.

  • Ability to effectively break instructions down to specific skills and techniques with patience and tact.

  • Ability to lead and train staff and/or volunteers in a various job-specific areas.

  • Ability to stay alert and identify potential and/or actual emergency situations.

  • Ability to learn job specific software and equipment.

  • Ability to lead and work with both adults and youth of all ages.

  • Ability to participate in a customer focused and team-oriented environment, contributing as lead and collaborator, when necessary.

  • Ability to maintain and exhibit integrity and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.

  • Ability to maintain and foster a culture of professionalism, adhere to departmental and City standards and specifications, and support a positive team environment.

  • Ability to resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.

  • Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula practices and procedures.

Working Conditions:

  • Positions requires the ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Duties are frequently performed under conditions where noise, heat, dampness or cold are unavoidable.

  • Work environment may involve occasional exposure to occupational hazards, biohazards, and physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

  • Duties may require driving City vehicles to transport youth of all ages to various recreational sites and facilities.

  • Positions require schedule flexibility to accommodate opening, closing, and/or weekend shifts.

Qualifications and Additional Application Materials

ALL POSITIONS

  • Must be of legal age to perform the duties of the positions.

  • Must have an American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, or similar certification from a nationally recognized program.

  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint background check.

LEAD LIFEGUARD

  • Must have 6 months of lifeguard and water quality experience.
